IN LOVING MEMORY

DANIEL JACK MATTHEWS 2-14-1986 -5-31-2003

An open book

In Memory of Danny and all the Children !

Children are an open book , with unwritten pages.
A waiting for us to take them through the stages

It start's with that very first touch

Filled with promise of love and dreams, to fill the skies .

This unspoken trust sparkle's within the little ones eyes !

Smiles ,giggles and songs to sing
Waiting to see what tomorrow will bring .

Days , months and years rush bye !
With day's to long and nights to short.
There is hardly time to hush a cry.

Others come with songs of sort,
rewriting there script ,

Helping to fill the pages
During , so many important stage's

But do they really care!
Are you still there ?

The book is being written day bye day ,
But lately had you much to say ?

Songs turn to word's
Not now , maybe later !

The sun goes down , for night to come

Off again , on the run .

With love in your heart .
For your child it was a magical start.

You believe your doing your part!

While you are off and on the run.
Your words , become .

What have you done !

Is it really them ,
Or did we forget to finish what we begun !

Forever in Tears

"There never was a time when a major social problem was solved by beating a child. And there

never will be such a time... For centuries adults have injured children and have lied about it,

and other adults have heard those lies and then merely turned away...

we must begin putting the blame where it belongs."

There is no Federal or State agency,

that we know of, that tracks the number of

deaths of youth in residential treatment facilities, boot camps, wilderness programs,

behavior modification programs, etc., nor is there any Federal or State agency that

tracks the number of deaths of youth after they leave such programs.

Legislation passed in 2000 by Congress (Children's Health Act 2000) that requires treatment

facilities who receive federal funds to report deaths caused by restraints and seclusion procedures

within 24 hours after the child has been removed from restraint or seclusion or

when it is reasonable to assume the death is a result of the restraint or seclusion.

Theses pages are dedicated in the ,

 Loving Memory of  my Son.

May , 31 , 2009 will be 6 years missing our son ,

 Daniel J Matthews .

6 Years with no justice !

6 years where Florida State employee's plus a child walk free .

For as in many other cases . None shall be found guilty when

a child is abused , harmed or dies while in State care .

For the very agencies that profess love for a child .

That claim too know better , to love better then the parents

 or family's .

Are the very people to walk free when they harm a child.

6 years waiting for a government to put a children above them self ,

6 years waiting to see children mean more then a persons job !

But why should many when they can legally harm and kill children ?

Though not all except , by denying what they see is

no better then those that commit the crimes !

Danny needed help , Danny asked for help !

Danny did not run the streets committing crimes .

Danny was a young man with a heart of gold for all

around him . Danny had two jobs was to start his third

at age seventeen , how many adults can claim this at there age ?

He suffered in pain every day of his life , both physically and

 emotionally for others .

Our crime was asking for help !

Danny's was believing if he trusted and talked to officers

 he would get help !

For that Danny is gone forever !

No One can give us Danny Our baby back !

But you All can help to save a child , All can open

your Hearts and Eyes to see Children

 mean more then us !

All can  Remember  the children lost !

Help fight the wrongs with in the Government that Protects

instutionalized child abuse and deaths .

Juvenile justice deaths

Eight youths have died in the custody of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice since 2000:

• Michael Wiltsie, 12, died Feb. 5, 2000, at a DJJ youth camp, Camp E-Kel-Etu in Marion County. Investigations concluded Michael, who weighed only 66 pounds, died of asphyxia after being held in a ''full-body restraint'' by a counselor who weighed over 300 pounds. While being held by the counselor, Michael yelled several times that he could not breathe. A death review said the counselor believed Michael was ``playing possum.''

• Anthony Dumas, 15, died Oct. 14, 2000. On June 12, 2000, he hanged himself with a leather belt from his bunk bed at the Lippman runaway shelter in Oakland Park. Police reports say three staff members on duty that night all failed to cut him down from the bed, and one snapped pictures of the teen with an instant camera. Anthony was not released from his noose until police arrived. He died after being in a coma for four months.

• Shawn D. Smith, 13, died Oct. 30, 2001, at the Volusia Regional Juvenile Detention Center. Smith was found with a sheet tied to his neck and to the door of his cell. He was supposed to be on ''close watch'' -- requiring officers to observe him ever five minutes -- as a suicide risk.

• Daniel 'Danny' Matthews, 17, died March 31, 2003, at the Pinellas Regional Juvenile Detention Center in St. Petersburg. Danny died of blunt trauma to the head after a detention officer, a noncertified trainee, mistakenly opened the cell door of another youth, who punched Danny twice, causing him to hit his head.

• Omar Paisley, 17, died June 9, 2003, at the Miami Juvenile Detention Center of a ruptured appendix that went untreated. Omar had complained to nurses and guards for three days that he was sick and in excruciating abdominal pain. Two nurses, who have been charged with third-degree murder, failed to treat him, and officers waited days before summoning help. Records show some of the officers and nurses thought Omar was faking.

• Willie Durden, 17, died Oct. 13, 2005, at the privately managed Cypress Creek Juvenile Offender Correctional Center in Lecanto, in Citrus County. An autopsy concluded Willie died of ventricular arrhythmia, due to an enlarged and diseased heart. A recent report says guards waited about 20 minutes after discovering the limp teen before calling 911 and beginning CPR. A guard told investigators he waited to begin CPR because teens sometimes ``play pranks.''

• Martin Lee Anderson, 14, died Jan. 6, 2006, at a Pensacola hospital one day after guards at the Bay County Sheriff's Office Boot Camp punched, kneed, and applied pressure to his head in an attempt to force him to continue running laps. An autopsy ordered by a special prosecutor concluded Martin died of asphyxia after guards covered his mouth and shoved ammonia capsules up his nose. A use-of-force report said the guards had thought Martin was malingering.

• Dillon Tyler Peak, 13, died June 17, 2006, after becoming ill at the Peace River Outward Bound wilderness camp in DeSoto County. Officials say Dillon apparently died of a severe case of encephalitis. The death remains under investigation.
