Dickiebirds

Beginner Breeder - D4331

Feeding,etc.

My feeding regime is very simple, the birds are fed on Versele-Laga 50/50 which I obtain from Bill Miller, I use Haith's conditioning seed, the reasoning behind this is, the birds. I have tried a few conditioning seed mixtures and have always gone back to Haith's, the birds love it and there is never any waste.

I don't tend to use a lot of additives, I have however, been trying Thrive & Gloss, this is usually placed in finger drawers, but in the main flight, I tend to add it now and again on top of the softfood.

When I first started I bought Haith's own Rearing and Conditioning softfood, to this I add, broccoli, carrot, apple, and occasionally hard boiled egg, all these are varied from day to day and the birds seem to like it, another new thing that I started to use last year (after a visit to Jim & Linda McGeehans) was couscous, since adding this to the mixture the birds rarely leave a drop, I occasionally add a sprinkling of garlic powder, smells lovely at the time and the birds get really excited, when they smell it, however, next morning you need a gas mask when you enter the birdroom. I have tried EMP, Orlux and a couple of others, but none are taken the same as the Haith's mixture, so I've gone back to it and I have to say that I am pleased with the results.

I also feed chickweed which I grow in a large tub, this way it's not affected by cats or Simba, this is also washed well before use. I am fortunate that I have fruit trees, these come in handy as they provide plenty of branches for the birds to chew on and it provides hours of entertainment and natural perching.
