Me gustaría pensar que esta página Web puede tender algunos puentes entre México y Londres. Creo que conozco a algunas personas a ambos lados del océano que les gustaría conocerse entre sí, o que hay sitios que pueden interesarles de los que quizá no tengan noticia. Si esta página sirve para que esas personas se lean, se escuchen, descubran un rincón de este complicado mundo cibernético donde haya algo para ellos, me dará mucho gusto. Por eso le he llamado “Puentes” a esta página de enlaces; es un poco larga, pero creo que vale la pena una breve introducción de los diversos sitios.

I would like to think that this webpage may work as a series of bridges between México and London. I think I know some people on both shores who would like to know each other, and that I know about some websites that may be of interest to them and about which they may know nothing yet. If this page allows these persons to read each other, listen to each other, or discover a corner in this complicated cyber-world where there may be something for them, I’ll be quite happy. That’s why I’ve called this links’ page “Bridges”. It’s a bit long, but I think a brief introduction to the different sites is worth the time dedicated to surf it.

Santa Sabina es una de las mejores y más respetadas bandas de rock mexicanas. Renunciaron a la esclavitud de una gran compañía disquera para volverse independientes, y su obstinado compromiso con la libertad creativa ha sido fructífero, apreciado por una vasta base de fans y músicos renombrados en México y en el extranjero. Santa Sabina is one of the best and most respected Mexican rock bands. Cuentan con el mejor catálogo de Europa en estos géneros. Si no vives en Londres, puedes adquirir libros por internet, aunque por supuesto siempre es mejor visitarlos y perderte por sus pasillos atestados de libros que no vas a encontrar en ninguna otra parte.
Erik Arthur and Ted Ball run the wondeful Fantasy Centre bookshop in north London, where for 30 years it’s been posible to find the rarest editions of science fiction, fantasy and horror literature. Tartarus Press es una editorial independiente especializada en autores nocturnos, decadentes, o aquellos cuyo corazón se inclina (como sucede con muchos de los que cruzan estos puentes), por los reinos oscuros y los paisajes invisibles. Pero no todo es bailar y cantar (¿así dice el dicho?). Qué daría yo por no pensar más que en la literatura, la música, el arte. Pero el mundo reclama nuestra atención de otras formas. Supongo que comparto con muchos los sentimientos de impotencia, horror e indignación frente a las atrocidades del mundo, y las de mi propio país. Quisiera compartir con ustedes dos sitios que me parecen necesarios: el del EZLN (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional), el ejército que se levantó en armas el primero de enero de 1994 para obligarnos a todos (dentro y fuera de México) a escuchar la voz de los indígenas mexicanos, y donde se concentran, a mi modo de ver, buena parte de los restos de dignidad que quedan en mi patria. El otro es el sitio de Make Poverty History, una “organización de organizaciones” que se hizo particularmente conocida por los conciertos de Live 8. Tanto en el caso del EZLN como en el de Make Poverty History, hay muchas personas que no simpatizan con ellos en lo absoluto, y hay que celebrar la pluralidad de perspectivas. No intento hacer propaganda de ningún tipo. Simplemente menciono dos movimientos que, en buena medida, han resultado convincentes para mí, y comparto sus páginas web con ustedes, por si les interesa asomarse y juzgar por ustedes mismos.
But not all is dancing and singing. I wish I could only think of literature, music and the arts! But the world claims for our attention in other ways too. I guess many of us share the feelings of horror, impotence and indignation as we witness the atrocities of the world, and then there are also of course the atrocities of my own country. I would like to share with you two websites that I think are necessary. One belongs to the EZLN (National Liberation Zapatista Army), which stood up in arms on January the 1st, 1994, to force us all (inside and outside Mexico) to listen to the Mexican indigenous population, and where, in my opinion, a great deal of the shreds of dignity left in my homeland are concentrated. The other is that of the sort of umbrella organization behind Make Poverty History, more widely known for the general public for their Live 8 concerts. I know that many people don’t sympathise at all either with the EZLN nor with Make Poverty History, and such a plurality of perspectives should always be welcome. Here I’m not trying to proselytize or anything of the sort. I’m simply mentioning two movements that to a fair extent have been convincing to me, and inviting you to take a look into their websites and judge by yourselves.

Finalmente, les comparto mi absoluto entusiasmo por la Fundación Barenboim-Said, creación del pianista y director de orquesta Daniel Barenboim y del fallecido Edward Said. En ella, la música busca ser justamente un puente de reconciliación entre las culturas; sus proyectos están dirigidos sobre todo a músicos jóvenes en el Medio Oriente. La Fundación es responsable del taller y la orquesta West-Eastern Divan. Cuando creemos que no queda esperanza, vale la pena volver la vista a realidades como ésta.
FInally, I want to share with you my absolute enthusiasm regarding the Barenboim-Said Foundation, created by Daniel Barenboim and late Edward Said. In it, music seeks to be precisely a bridge of reconciliation among cultures, and its projects are mainly directed at young musicians in the Middle East. The Foundation is responsible for the West-Easter Divan workshop and Orchestra. When we think there's no more hope left, it's always worth while to turn and look at such uplifting realities.
