There are walks alongside the river Wharfe, with its peaceful shallows and fearsome Strid, through Strid Wood, with its rich variety of wildlife, and as a completed contrast some that cross the exposed purple heights of heather moor land. There are 8 walks in total around the Estate and Strid Wood Nature Trails

Saturday 22nd October

Now I know that a Kingfisher is local to one of the patches I’ve been viewing recently, I thought I might strike lucky and gain a few photographs this morning. However, just as I was setting up, a quick flash of blue shot down the river and totally out of sight. Not to worry, it goes with the waiting game when out birding but I did hear plenty of Robins, Great tits and Blackbirds.

With it still only mid morning, I thought I’d give the reserve at Bicester a visit. Well at least I can use the hide if the weather turns! It was wonderful to see so many Meadow Pipits sharing a pool of water with the Pied Wagtails. Not too much out on the water from where I was first placed then, just as I was about to move further up the reserve all hell broke out in the skyline. A Buzzard had moved in the air space sending up Gulls, Crows, Teal and Shovellers that had been further down the other end of the reserve. The three Herons hiding in the rushes continue to remain stock-still.

On the way home, I thought I turn off and come back via the gated road at Milton. Saw a Kestrel hunting then two lovely pairs of Yellowhammers.

I managed to get a few shots in so if good enough, I'll post them later

23rd October - Boddington Reservoir

Normally the reservoir allows for a peaceful stroll but not this morning. Noise from around the reservoir echoed no matter which way I turned. An angling match was on with shouts and calls ringing out between each match peg. Then, to top it off as I reach the top corner heading towards the dam, gunshot rang out followed by someone using a Gyrocopter. Memo to self, avoid Sunday mornings in future

I was just about to give up and head back towards the car when four Stonechats appeared. A nice viewing but they didn't stay long enough to smile for the camera!

Other species seen: Black headed gull, Great Crested Grebe, Mallard, Redwing, Stonechat, Bullfinch, Robin, Great tit, Goldfinch, Blue tit, Rock Pipit, Red Poll, Heron, Canada Geese, Yellowhammer and Pochard.

Sunday 20th November

Having heard reports of a Snow Bunting being at Farmoor reservoir, I drove down early to make the most of a nice walk around the whole of the reservoir before any sail boats hit the water. Not the best days to head out as the fog thickened as I approached with visibility almost down to a few feet.

Pied wagtails, Meadow pipits, Tufted duck, Commorants, Mallard and Coot were all easy to distinguish but no Snow Bunting.  Not to worry, the other birders who had also arrived early all seem to be of the opinion that it was still nice to get out and about no matter what the weather.

With the fog still moving in, I heading up to the Bicester reserve knowing that I would be able to try my hand at digiscoping on the feeders now being used full time.  Having just stepped out the car and gathering all my gear together, I head back down the road to see what might be out and about on the frozed water.  Imagine my surprise when I was confronted by a wonderful sight of a fox heading towards me.  I don't know who was the most shocked, me or it.  My only regret was that the camera wasn't set up to capture the scene.  Mr Fox took one look and turned tail only to disappear from sight.

Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Wren, Robin, Heron, Jackdaw all showing well.

27th December 2005 - Bicester Reserve

The journey out would normally be very straightforward with the car almost in autopilot as I pass the entrance to my place of work! However, with a harsh frost still on the road followed by a new covering light snow, both eyes were needed for the road as apposed to watching the skyline!

With the majority of the water surface still frozen over, the few birds about were in the neighbouring water works vicinity. Thankfully there is a nice hide to take cover in otherwise it would have been a very quick mornings outing.

Not too much about but I did get the following: Robin, Blue tit, Great tit, Dunnock, Coots, Moorhen, Mallard, Teal, Shoveler, Gadwell, Heron, Great spotted woodpecker, Wigeon, Redwing, Crow.  Kestrel and Buzzard where also seen on route.
