2008 Categories
Little Sparks - Open to all children under the age of 12. Three (3) minute maximum time limit. Entry Fee: $10.
Rising Flames - Open to all non-professional soloist with three (3) years or less experience. As a non-professional you can not have earned money or promoted yourself as a belly dancer. Four (4 ) minute maximum time limit. Entry Fee: $25.
Fiery Fusion - Open to all soloist performing any style of fusion dance with belly dance as the predominate dance. Six (6) minute maximum time limit. Entry Fee: $35
Burning Flame - Open to all soloist over the age of 45. Six (6) minute maximum time limit. Entry Fee: $35.
Troupe on Fire - Open to all troupes of three (3) or more. Maximum time limit is ten (10) minutes. Entry fee: $20 per member.
Desert Flame - Open to all soloist of professional, semi-professional or advanced status. There is an eight (8) minute maximum time limit. Entry Fee: $45

Rules & Regulations
1. Entries are accepted on a first come first served basis, until the deadline date or all categories are filled . All entries must be postmarked on or before February 10, 2007. We do not take reservations. You will not be entered until we receive both your entry form and fees.
2. Refunds, only if the category is filled or the category is canceled. NO OTHER REFUNDS.
3. Categories must have three (3) or more entries or they will be canceled.
4.Competitors may enter more than one category, provided they meet the criteria for the categories and understand they must follow the tight schedule for each category provided to them in their competitors packet.
5. All competitors must supply two (2) Cd‘s or two (2) high quality cassette tapes with only the music for your performance, already queued and ready to go. (Use of several Cd’s or sections out of order on a marketed Cd’s is not acceptable.)
6.Cassettes and/or Cd’s must have your name and category on the cassette or Cd‘s, NOT ON THE CASE.
7. There will be no rehearsals and no live music. Musicians will not be allowed on stage as back-up for performers.
8. Time restrictions will be strictly adhered to. Anyone going over the time limits will be automatically disqualified.
9. Competitors must check in at the designated time for their categories. This information will be provided to you two (2) weeks before the competition.. At the time of check in the competitor will be told of his/her/their dance position. If a competitor is not checked in at designated time the competitor will be disqualified with NO REFUND. Once checked in you will not be allowed to leave the area. If competitors are not ready to go on stage at the designated time slot the competitor will be disqualified with NO REFUND.
10. The Desert Fire Committee reserve the right to disqualify and/or deny anyone the right to perform in the competition/show if s/he/they appear to be intoxicated or act in a manner that is detrimental to the competitin, the competitors and/or any other persin(s) involved in Desert Fire with NO REFUNDS.
11. Competitors must submit a brief bio, 3-5 sentences, which may be edited by the Desert Fire Committee at the time of registration. Photos are optional but if sent by e-mail please send jpeg.
12. Competitors, Vendors, Judges and Performers authorize Tasha Banat, Zakia Hamwee, associates and heirs to use or sell all photos and videos taken during said competition, for educational, promotional, and professional purposes. Competitors release all rights, compensation recourse and complaints.
13. For each competitor, All other scores will be added up to determine 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.
14. Winners of each category will be announced after the competition. Awards will be presented after the competition. First place winners of the Double Flames, Fiery Fsion, Burning Flames Troupe on Fire, Tribal Fire and Desert Flame will be invited to perform during the show.
15. The El Paso Scottish Rite, Tasha Banat, Zakia Hamwee, their heirs and anyone working with or connected to Desert Fire will not be held responsible for loss or theft, damage, injury etc, to competitors personal belongings or competitor. Competitors, Judges, Performers and Vendors assume all responsible and liability for themselves and all personal property.
16. All applications, forms, contracts, releases, monies, etc. must be signed by Competitors, Performers, Judges or Vendors and received by Desert Fire 2007 committee before being accepted into any category for Desert Fire 2007.
17. All participants will receive a certificate of participation. 3rd Place winners will receive a certificating stating 3rd Place. The winners of 2nd place will receive a certificate and a trophy. All first place winners will receive a certificate, a trophy and a cash prize.

Judging Criteria
Appearance/Costume
Make Up
The competitor should wear make-up that enhances his/her appearance or fits in with the theatrical _expression of the performance. The competitor has taken into consideration, lights, staging area, distance, etc.
Costume Appearance/Style
Your costume should reflect the category of the competition. The costume should fit the style of the dance and work well with the music. The costume should be neat, clean and wrinkle free. The costume should fit properly, be flattering to the competitor, and be in good repair. It should not overpower nor take away from the performance. Only intended body parts should be exposed.
Entertainment Ability
Poise & Posture
Competitor is balanced, steady in carriage of head, body (posture) is self confident, in control of performance and able to recover from unexpected situations.
Personality, Creativity and Entertainment Level
Competitor has visual contact and rapport with the audience that obviously expresses feelings. Should possess the ability to appeal to the audience through ones individuality/personality. Competitor is able to draw the audience into the mood he/she/they are trying to convey and is enjoying what he/she/they are doing. Competitor should be innovative and imaginative in presentation.
Dance Ability
Entrance / Exit
Competitor(s) should gain the audience's attention from the moment he/she/they enter the stage or room. If the competitor(s) start on stage than the first move will be considered an entrance. The competitor(s) exit and or the end of his/her/their choreography should be memorable and impressive. Keep in mind while on stage you are still being judged even after the finale of said choreography. Bows and thank-you’s will be considered as part of your exit.
Technique
The competitor’s mastery of movements/steps and ability to follow through with extensions and movements (to complete a move or step and not cut it short). Competitor should use a variety of steps that flow well together. A great dancer will make the most difficult of moves seem effortless and smooth and the most simple - the most impressive
Isolations
The competitor’s ability to isolate separate parts of the body with minimal incidental movement of the rest of the body. Isolations should be clean, precise and very visible (leaving no doubt). Multiple isolations considered to be highly advanced.
Use of Space and Stage
Competitor’s ability to use the stage effectively, moving skillfully from one place to the next (the ability to use directional changes smoothly).
Musical Interpretation
Transitions
Competitor utilizes transitions in the music to his/her/their advantage with accents, and such. Competitor should appear to "hear" transition points in the music as the body follows through. Transitions should be smooth and flowing.
Knowledge of Rhythms and Accents
The competitor should be moving with the music and not fighting or chasing it. This will be obvious by chosen moves and steps. Competitor uses stops, accents, etc. in the music appropriately.
Fiery Fusion
Blend of Dance Styles
Competitor should mix costumes, dance moves and music appropriately. The dance movement should be predominantly Middle Eastern in basics. However, to carry the theme of the music used, other dance styles should be incorporated (but not the predominant style).
Entertainment Value
It is Important to be able to engage and keep the attention of the audience through translation of music. Originality and creativity is strongly considered.

Doulbe Flames
Choreography
The choreography should blend well with all performers in the troupe/duet and not appear to be too difficult for some while not challenging enough for others. During the performance if some dancers are strong and others are not averaging the score may be appropriate.
Precision / Unison
The competitors should work well together and appear to be performing as a troupe/duet, one in unison and not an individual’s own style as a soloist.
Entertainment Value
It is Important to be able to engage and keep the attention of the audience through translation of music. Originality and creativity is strongly considered.
Judge’s Comments
Constructive criticism only. No derogatory or hurtful remarks. Make your suggestions and comments in a professional, effective manner.
