Practitioners usually learned their skills from the teachings of their elders. According to Delaware belief practitioners are the media through which the creator sends his healing power to alleviate distress caused by physical and mental ills that attack frail bodies of mankind.Delaware Indians healers prayed to the higher spirit force for aid with their undertakings.Delaware Indians believed that these healers were powerful and not only healed humans, but also animals.

Their Beliefs Were

  • Plants have spiritual natures as do all of mankind. Delaware Practitioners believed in always performing rituals prior to gathering plants for medicine making. A small hole was dug near the east side of the base of the plant and tobacco was placed into it to appease the spirit of the plant. This tradition is still practiced by some Delaware healers today. A custom of prayer is observed prior to gathering medicine plants. Delaware healers were conservative and gathered only what was needed.

  • To avoid contamination of their plants, DELAWARE INDIAN healers believed they shouldn't place medicine plants near or in contact with metal objects.

  • Delaware people believed that physical abnormalities were caused by wicked spirits. They also thought that paralysis is said to be the result of an encounter with an apparition.

  • Delaware Practitioners rarely ever treated themselves. They called another to treat and cure their ills.
After diagnosis of a patient, if an illness is beyond their power they often referred patients to another more capable healer to discover a cure.

  • Delaware healers had profound faith and observed the laws of nature. The powers entrusted in them were never to be used for evil purposes.

Delaware Indians had a custom of not accepting gifts or payment for their services.

What type of plants did the Delaware Indians use for healing?

  • Only plants that were clean and well developed. Plant roots and barks were used as medicines. Roots had to be free from knotty growth. Bark was selected from a sturdy well formed tree. Delaware Indians believed that bark from the east side of the tree was best since it received strength giving properties from the morning sun.

  • Prior to restoring ones health Delaware Indians often crushed leaves or roots in running water to determine if a patient would be cured. If a root or leaf sank they believed the person would die, if they floated a speedy recovery was expected.

When other remedies failed, a medicine was made from scrapings of deer antlers
