The More People I Meet - The More I Like My Dogs

The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth.
It's called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colours.
Just this side of the Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, they go to this place.
There is always food and water and warm spring weather.
The old, frail animals are young again.
They play all day with each other.
There is only one thing missing; they are not with their special person who loved them so much on Earth.
Each day they all run and play, until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up.
The nose twitches.  The ears rise up.  The eyes are staring.
Then suddenly, this one runs from the group.
You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take them in your arms and you both embrace.
Your face is licked again and again and you once more look into the eyes of your trusted pet.
Then, you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be parted.
Anon.

GOD'S GARDEN MUST BE BEAUTIFUL

God saw you getting tired,
When a cure was not to be.
So He wrapped His arms around you,
And whispered, "Come to Me".

You didn't deserve what you went through,
So He gave you rest.
God's garden must be beautiful,
He only picks the best.

And when I saw you sleeping,
So peaceful and free from pain,
I could not wish you back
To suffer that again.

To Maureen.......

I know you’re feeling guilty and asking yourself why?

But the pain and tears will fade as time slowly passes by

You promised Gabbi you’d let her go before she was in pain

She had a fantastic summer, so your vow was not in vain

You know she didn’t suffer ~ you’d have seen it in her eyes

The week before she left you, she even won a prize

It was because she loved you she let you know her time was near

And she wanted to tell you that for her it held no fear

She’s now looking down at you from her comfy cloud above

And you don’t need me to tell you that she’s sending all her love

Next year when you go in the ring with Teig or Minkie-Moo

I’ll bet you anything you like Gab will be with you too

It’s going to be a while before you stop feeling sad

But I hope you’ll soon be able to smile when you think of *Gobby* Gab

TRIBUTE TO RICKY

Our 'Little Blue'

You may have moved into a higher place and watching us from above,

But from all the tears you've seen us cry you know that you were loved.

You chose to come and live with us so many years ago

And settled into our family the only way you would know.

The training part was such great fun as we watched you train your Dad,

He really got into the training game as he saw you looking so glad.

But we knew there was one last decision, we had to make for you.

You were getting rather tired and you too knew your time was through.

Between the tears we said goodbye and sent you on your way

Please wait for us Dear Ricky until we meet again some day.

There was no other born in the litter that day

And as Etti was the only one, with you she had to stay

I’m not saying she was spoilt

I’m not saying she was in your heart

But I know how hard it must’ve been when you finally had to part

Look back on the good times

The things that made you smile

Maybe not tomorrow, but in a little while

You did obedience together but it had to be *Etti’s way*

She never really could see why the test included stays

Heelwork, Sendaways, Retrieves were all brill

She just never got the hang of having to sit still

So if a star is moving through the clouds then you can bet

It’ll be your very special girl

Dyce
(06/02/1995 ~ 13/01/2008)
Loved & Missed By Dottie

When Dottie went with a friend to see a litter of pups
She didn’t intend to buy one, she only went to look
But Dyce had other ideas and promptly made her his
He jumped about and wagged his tail and sealed it with a kiss
He had little legs that would have made Queen Ann proud
And he had ears like Auntie Fern but we mustn’t say that out loud
He huffed and he puffed and in the car you had to take care
Coz if the window wasn’t open,  he’d snaffle all the air
He won through the classes and made it into ‘C’
Then he designed his own rounds up, so a win was not to be
He came to this year’s Christmas party and really had a ball
He mooched about
He pottered
He took sweeties from us all
Then his leg’s got all wobbly and he found it hard to stand
If he wanted to get up he needed a helping hand
Dot made the decision to do the dreaded deed
But Dyce had to let her know, there really was no need
He lay down beside her chair and drifted off to sleep
And asked The Man above if his soul he’d keep
Dottie, I bet Pid was waiting to show Dyce what to do
Just like when the time comes, he’ll be waiting there for you

A Certain Kind Of Friendship

There's a certain kind of friendship that is difficult to beat

And very hard to find in the people that we meet

Yet every dog that ever lived has this gift to bestow

A loyal, firm devotion – as so many of you know.

Though people judge you by your looks, your cash, your job, your car,

A dog is so much wiser, he accepts you as you are.

You can be a saint or sinner, down and out or millionaire.

He’ll not ask to see your pedigree, as long as you are there.

While those around are planning all their trips to Greece and Spain,

With him you’ll find pleasure in a romp along the lane.

His days are full of pleasure, yet his needs are very few,

A pat, a dish, a cushion, a ball to fetch for you.

If others seem to shun you – maybe think you’re just a bore,

He’ll let you keep on talking, though he’s heard it all before.

As he settles close beside you with his head upon your knee,

There’s no place in all the world that he would rather be.

When many may be missing in your hour of need and strife,

There’s one who’s always ready to defend you with his life.

No matter whether right or wrong, he’ll never criticise

But shows his trusting confidence in clear, adoring eyes.

And when his life is ending, from the signs that you can tell

That joy has turned to misery and he never will get well,

And the tail that wagged in ecstasy to greet you at the door,

Is hanging low, and honest eyes are sad and shine no more.

It will break your heart to do it, for you know you’ll miss him so,

But when active life is over, then it’s kinder to let go.

Just to make his ending easy is the last thing you can give,

And to let him die with dignity, the way you let him live.

THE PETS THAT SHARE OUR LIVES

 They will not go quietly,
the pets who've shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know
their spirit still survives.

Old habits still can make us
think we hear them at the door
Or step back when we drop
a tasty morsel on the floor.

Our feet still go around the place
the food dish used to be,
And,sometimes,coming home at night,
we miss them terribly.

And although time may bring new friends
and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts
belongs to them...
and always will.

Tribute to a best friend

Sunlight streams through window pane unto a spot on the floor....
then I remember, it's where you used to lie, but now you are no more.

Our feet walk down a hall of carpet, and muted echoes sound....
then I remember, It's where your paws would joyously abound.

A voice is heard along the road, and up beyond the hill,
then I remember it can't be yours....your golden voice is still.

But I'll take that vacant spot of floor and empty muted hall
and lay them with the absent voice and unused dish along the wall.

I'll wrap these treasured memorials in a blanket of my love
and keep them for my best friend until we meet above.

Pennies on the ground

I found a penny today
Just laying on the ground,
But it's not just a penny
This little coin I've found.

Found pennies come from heaven
That's what my Grandad told me.
He said "Dog-Angels toss them down."
Oh, how I loved that story.

He said, "When a Dog-Angel misses you,
He tosses a penny down,
Sometimes just to cheer you up
To make a smile out of your frown."

So don't pass by that penny
When you're feeling blue,
It may be a penny from heaven
That you dog has tossed for you.

  LIVING LOVE

If you ever love an animal, there are three days in your life you will always remember …

The first is a day, blessed with happiness, when you bring home your young new friend.
You may have spent weeks deciding on a breed. You may have asked numerous opinions of many vets, or done long research in finding a breeder. Or, perhaps in a fleeting moment, you may have just chosen that silly looking mutt in a shelter - simply because something in its eyes reached your heart. But when you bring that chosen pet home, and watch it explore, and claim its special place in your hall or front room - and when you feel it brush against you for the first time - it instills a feeling of pure love you will carry with you through the many years to come.

The second day will occur eight or nine or ten years later.
It will be a day like any other. Routine and unexceptional. But, for a surprising instant, you will look at your longtime friend and see age where you once saw youth. You will see slow deliberate steps where you once saw energy, and you will see sleep where you once saw activity. So you will begin to adjust your friend's diet - and you may add a pill or two to her food. You may feel a growing fear deep within yourself, which bodes of a coming emptiness. You will feel this uneasy feeling, on and off, until the third day finally arrives.

And on this day - if your friend and God have not decided for you, then you will be faced with making a decision of your own - on behalf of your lifelong friend, and with the guidance of your own deepest Spirit. But, whichever way your friend eventually leaves you - you will feel as alone as a single star in the night. If you are wise, you will let the tears flow as freely and as often as they must. If you are typical, you will find that not many in your circle of family or friends will be able to understand your grief, or comfort you. But if you are true to the love of the pet you cherished through the many joy-filled years, you may find that a soul - a bit smaller in size than your own - seems to walk with you, at times, during the lonely days to come.

And at moments when you least expect anything out of the ordinary to happen, you may feel something brush against your leg - very, very lightly. Looking down at the place where your dear, perhaps dearest, friend used to lay - you will remember those three significant days. The memory will most likely be painful, and leave an ache in your heart.
As time passes, the ache will come and go as if it has a life of its own. You will both reject it and embrace it, and it may confuse you. If you reject it, it will depress you. If you embrace it, it will deepen you. Either way, it will still be an ache.

But there will be, I assure you, a fourth day when - along with the memory of your pet - and piercing through the heaviness in your heart - there will come a realisation that belongs only to you. It will be as unique and strong as our relationship with each animal we have loved, and lost. This realisation takes the form of a Living Love - like the heavenly scent of a rose that remains after the petals have wilted, this Love will remain and grow - and be there for us to remember. It is a love we have earned. It is the legacy our pets leave us when they go. And it is a gift we may keep with us as long as we live. It is a Love which is ours alone.

And until we ourselves leave, perhaps to join our Beloved Pets - it is a Love we will always possess.
