It was a fortnight before christmas when I went to the Jerry Green Dog Sanctuary with a friend coz she wanted a little dog and they'd just had a litter of eight pups dumped. The puppies were in a big pen. They were about five/six weeks old. Mother a Sheltie, Father a Jack Russell but the owners didn't want the hassle of finding homes so took them to the shelter.
All the pups but one were playing and pottering around. My friend chose the only white one, all the others were sable. Unfortunately, this pup had already been reserved. We got into the pen and I picked the little loner up to have a love. He seemed very vacant! The owner of the shelter said that she thought that he was blind and that no one would want him.
Can you see a pattern emerging?
I did try very hard to resist but in the end left it to fate again. I said I would leave him there but if he hadn't been adopted by christmas I would go back and fetch him. He couldn't be in a rescue at christmas, Santa might not leave him any presents. Surprise, surprise. He was still there on christmas eve, so home he came. My friend never did have one.

He was so tiny you could nearly fit him in one hand. He definitely wasn't blind, he could get through the bars of my gate at top speed without tou
ching the sides! What he lacked in size he made up for in attitude! Before long it was apparent that he might be a problem. We have had quite a few disagreements and several fights along the way but I think now at six years old he is starting to see things my way.
He still tries to get all his mates into trouble. He's always the one that starts the barking off. He's always the one that takes them 'just out of earshot' down the river and he's always the one that leads the choir when we go to the field where we train.
I still wouldn't trust him with strange dogs, or his mates for that matter. He shows no warning when he decides he's had enough, he just goes in. (See the first line of writing)
But when all is said and done, if there's just me and him, he's a little love.
And Santa knows where to leave his toys!
