The Beginning... What a Good Place to Start!
At fifty-plus, I finally figured out what I want to be when (if?) I grow up. I want to write! I've always loved to read, and eventually the writing followed. I started with poetry in the mid to late 80's, and achieved a limited amount of success in several inspirational magazines. The Pentecostal Evangel, Standard, HiCall, Woman's Touch, and Daily Meditation became familiar with my name as I submitted poetry and short non-fiction pieces which frequently made it to publication. I also wrote a comedic "Erma Bombeck-ish" column, "Debbie's Diary", in the Officer's Wives Club newsletters at England Air Force Base in the early '80's. But I still hadn't found my niche in life.
Finally, my good friend James K. Bowers roped me into The Herscher Project, a group of sci-fi/fantasy writers. A Cinderella story! The perfect fit. I loved the genre, and found myself cranking out story after story. I have a shelf on the largest science fiction site in the world, Elfwood. The journey to unknown worlds and across the span of centuries has been exciting and rewarding. I've written about androids, killer viruses, lake-dwelling monsters, dragons, and medieval kingdoms. And I still manage to find time for poetry once in awhile!
My first book project will be coming out on April 3, 2007. Light at the Edge of Darkness is an anthology of Christian speculative fiction, the labor of love of over a dozen authors, including A.P. Fuchs, Susan Kirkland, V.B. Tenery, Frank Creed, Grace Bridges, Angela Perry, Steve Doyle, Adam and Andrea Graham, Daniel Weaver, Carizz Cruzem, Steve Rice, Aisha Moore, Chad Lavender, Joseph Ficor, Donna Sundblad, and Karen McSpadden. From angels and demons to aliens and zombies, these stories show amazing authors doing what they love best --- telling stories from the depths of their imaginations! I've been enormously blessed to be counted in their ranks. I have three stories coming out in LatEoD myself. "Allison" tells the story about a little girl who has one overwhelming desire in life: to meet the mother she has never known. "The Rider" tells of Alice Henderson's stagecoach journey to New Mexico on the Santa Fe Trail. Her romantic ideals, secretly cultivated in novels, takes quite a different turn when the stagecoach is attacked and most of the passengers die. And "Fumbleblot's Task" follows the duties of a demon who must cause a young believer to fall into superstitious fear, relinquishing her newfound faith in the process. Editor Cynthia MacKinnon has done a wonderful job of pulling together this dynamic cast to form the Lost Genre Guild, under the wings of The Writers Cafe Press. Kudos, Cyn! And thank you for allowing us room to fly!
So come along with me! I'll show you glimpses of my worlds, bits and pieces of poetry, and book reviews you won't want to miss. I'll also introduce you to the wonderful people who have helped boost me to this point and time in my life. Without them, I would be lounging in front of the television with my two puppies, Beau and Vegas! Believe me.... these worlds in my mind are far more interesting places to visit than the sofa!
