There was a saying in the DARFUR in which I was raised: "A woman has no enemy"

Those words are not spoken here anymore.

Now, I regret to say, the enemies are everywhere, the terror is unrelenting, and the tradgedy of these awful years has fallen especially heavily on both the women of Darfur-and, with more horror than my words could possibly convey-the girls.

They are targets of a systematic campaign of rape and the sexual brutality whose terror words cannot convey.  It is a tragedy magnified by the fact that just recently-yet in a memory that seems so distant-women occupied the exalted position in Darfur.  They were leaders in their families.  They walked the streets in safety and spoke with strangers without fear.

I am among the fortunate ones.  I escaped the Genocide-but in my heart, I can never leave the women and girls of Darfur.  Helping them to survive- and to repair, as best they can, the shattered pieces of their lives-is my work.  It is my calling.

And we must never forget this It is making a difference.  You are making a difference.
