"Temperament is defined as that part of the personality which is genetically based."

It is important to keep in mind that we all use both functions each day. Just that we use one, more naturally, or more often than the other.

Temperament is something nice to have in the back of our minds, to remember that each one of us has a different approach to life. This may help us to build up our tolerances to others.

The Four Letters

Extravert -or - Introvert

The first letter in a temperament is "E" or "I." The letter stands for your attitude or personal style. *stated by: Lenore Thomson. Basically, it's your comfort-zone. The way you think and your ideal environment that causes you the least amount of tension.

Extravert- requires people around for feedback and to produce: stimulation, thoughts, and ideas. They may use talk to come to a place of clarity. They adjust: adapt, (or change somehow) to outward situations so that they can interact with it.

Introvert- requires time alone because their stimulation, thoughts, and ideas come from their own mind. They may use thinking or feeling to reach clarity. They try to keep themselves and their own personal values intact, despite their social interactions.

Sensation -or- Intuition

The second letters are "sensation" or "Intuition." This is your perceiving function.*Lenore Thomson. The two middle letters get you through your everyday experiences. Plainly stated, the second letter explains how you would normally gather information during the surprises in life, or the unexpected. This is your motive behind your actions.

*Extraverted use of middle letters: What they “bring to the world” or “find in common with others"

Extravert Sensation- takes in information with their eyes and mind to physically interact with it. Appearances, facts, details of their surroundings, at that exact moment. ( Like a "snap-shot" picture. ) ESTP; ESFP; ISFP; ISTP

Introvert Sensation- takes in the same information, to retain it.

Extravert Intuition-looks at the larger picture, a pattern in possibilities. Then, works backwards from there. (Takes a "snap-shot" picture. But, also includes the feelings, thoughts, and emotions of the moment. How the picture fits into life.) ENTP; ENFP; INTP; INFP

Introvert Intuition-also, looks at the larger picture and understands the meaning is relative to one's own perspective.

Thinking -or- feeling

The third letter "T" or "F" stand for how you usually weigh the important things in life, on a usual basis. This is called your Judging function.*Lenore Thomson. It is what we use to come to everyday decisions quickly, based on our patterns of thoughts.

*Extraverted use of middle letters: What they “bring to the world” or “find in common with others"

Extravert Thinking- organizing behaviors in a general way. Facts, logic, impersonal. How things work within the categories that society provides. ESTJ; ENTJ; ISTJ; INTJ

Introvert Thinking- organizing the same way. But, to get a mental picture in relation to the entire social system.

Extravert Feeling- organizing behaviors specifically. Personal, Values, Morals. What values are held in common, within society. Empathetic and people-oriented. ESFJ; ENFJ; ISFJ; INFJ

Introvert Feeling- organized by a personal flame of values, based on character.

Perceiving -or- Judging

The last letter of "P" or "J" tell us the way we naturally act in public. It's what we bring to the world. Whether we are Extraverted or Introverted, it's what we use to fit into society. This tells us a great deal about the way we understand the pleasures, problems, and purpose of life.*Lenore Thomson

Perceiving- drawn to opportunities to do something well, or enjoyed by others. Playful, lively, entertaining, adaptable, willing to take risks.

Judging- draw to a system of a well-thought out plan. Rational, responsible, honest, committed, willing to use disappointments to learn.

* In the home, the opposite may be dominant. The perceiving person may be controlling of their freedom and their environment. The judging person may have difficulty with setting up boundaries, in their personal lives. This inward/outward division is normal for all types.
