Lets assume you have opened a contest in your website and the expiration date is over. That means that many web pages will be permanently unavailable. But many visitors won't know that. So they got "301 error codes" and a weird message!

The visitor won't know about the expiration date. S/he won't get the opportunity to subscribe to your newsletter. S/he won't know about the next contest's date. This visitor might think that you have definitely closed your website and s/he won't come back... In fact, you have just moved one page :-(

Now lets say you have posted ads on eZines or written a eBook full of links back to specific pages on your website: contact form, old version of your software, previous article... etc

But actually these pages are renamed or moved. So all those links on your ads and eBooks are broken. So your visitors will get the same old "404 File Not Found" message.

Lets say you've got a membership website (members should come to your login page and enter their ID and password).

Visitors may attempt to get into your website through a link they've found in your ad, eBook or software. But they will get a "401 error" (Unauthorized area) and they maybe won't know that's a paid website.

You should always set up a page to show instead of the "401 error". There you should tell people clearly that's a membership website and ask them to verify their data for members and also invite new members to join -- showing them a link to the signup page. All this is done via the "401 error" page!

This time, lets assume that you would like to show up a different webpage as the default page of your website. In this new page you want to make a special offer for holidays, Xmas, discount or whatever. The idea is that people who visit your website won't miss your offer.

As you know, the default page is the same page that will open when people point their internet browser to your website. Usually this page is named: index.htm

So people who visit: http://www.yourdomain.com

...are automatically shown the file:

http://www.yourdomain.com/index.htm or,
http://www.yourdomain.com/index.html

In our example, you want to make your special offer the default page. You need to swap files or make the offer into your index file. The problem is that you have to temporarily alter this page (and lower the page's SE rankings) and reverse the process when the offer is over.

Please note that you shouldn't redirect people from your index file to your offer page. Because the major search engines (like Google and Yahoo) will consider this as cheating (also called cloaking) and they may penalize your website.

The alternative is to simply change the priority of your pages from your server. All you have to do is to tell your server that you want the special offer as the default page and simply cancel that when the offer is over. This is simple to do if you have the right configuration tools.

This agreement will terminate immediately without notice at Dead-end Site Mending (in association with Mouloud Siaci) sole discretion, should you fail to comply with any term or provision of this agreement. Upon termination, you must destroy all materials obtained from this site and any and all other Dead-end Site Mending (in association with Mouloud Siaci) site(s) and all copies thereof, whether made under the terms of this agreement or otherwise.
