July-December, 2009

Dear fellow Filipinos, Let us not forget, for our sakes. Benigno Aquino, Jr., born Nov. 27, 1932, died Aug. 21, 1983. I remember his words: “ The Filipino is worth dying for. ” Ninoy was sure. But it seems to say more about the man than about the people.
Now, twenty years after, the Filipino seems to have forgotten or perhaps never really understood the meaning of those few words - few words of challenge and farewell from a brave and brilliant Filipino who fought a dictator, was imprisoned, went to exile then returned to his country - to die - for his people. With all that is happening, sadly, I wondered what Ninoy would say now. Spontaneously, (in thought), facing me he said : “LOVE”. I thought: just one word, apolitical, too high, lofty, ‘hindi bagay’ to say to a cantankerous and cynical people. He added: “ Love God, love your country.”
Oh, now I see. Clearly. Completely. Love for God and love for his people are why Ninoy said: “ The Filipino is worth dying for.” It seems to have been said in a political context, but it was not a political statement after all. Love had united his thoughts with God, with and in whose behalf he had said, and now in a different light we recall: “ The Filipino is worth dying for.” Let us be grateful. Ninoy's martyrdom once again reminds us of the One Supreme Sacrfice - for one reason, one message: LOVE.
