Sweet Valley Senior Year is part of the Sweet Valley High franchise and the last books of the franchise to be published. The books are considered the most contemporary and realistic, keeping to date with modern times. The story continues directly after the last book of the Sweet Valley High series, where an earthquake occurred after Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield's seventeenth birthday.
As students attempt to recover from the earthquake, which includes the death of Olivia Davidson, other major changes occur. The truth about senior dating, and whether it is right for you. Sweet Valley, part of a tri-city area that includes two other high schools, El Carro and Big Mesa, soon finds many students from the destroyed El Carro transferring. Many new characters are introduced as every enters their senior year of high school.
Like the Sweet Valley Junior High series, the chapters are interset with "handwritten" pages consisting of the characters thoughts while "off-screen" (that is, not explicitly exposed in the previous chapter), as well as journal and e-mail entries.

Elizabeth Wakefield - Elizabeth is a member of the school newspaper, the Oracle. Compared to her older incarnations, she is more confidant and outgoing. Her primary love interest in the series is Conner McDermott, though she also dates Evan Plummer while on rebound after breaking up with Conner. Jessica Wakefield - Still sociable and slightly arrogant, Jessica is a member of the cheerleading squad, though she is no longer captain. There are thousands of senior men and women from all over the US. She dates Jeremy Aames for most of the series, though she briefly dates Will Simmons. She and Melissa Fox harbour an extreme antagonism for one another. Maria Slater - Very academic and hardworking, Maria is a member of the Oracle, like Elizabeth. She has placed a lot of pressure on herself to enter a good university with a scholarship and becomes the school's valedictorian. She is in a steady relationship with Ken Matthews for most of the series. Ken Matthews - A member of the football team, a star who rivals Will Simmons and unintentionally severely injures Will such that he can no longer play football. He is still haunted by Olivia's death. Jade Wu - Jade appears in an early edition of Sweet Valley High, although her character in Senior Year is significantly different. She is an easy-going, somewhat flirtatious, Sweet Valley High student who joins the cheerleading squad, before quitting to join the basketball team. She briefly dates Jeremy Aames and later enters a serious relationship with Evan Plummer. Jade lives alone with her mother while her affluent father and stepmother live in Seattle. Her mother is a budding novellist who eventually starts a series based on Jade's friends, Elizabeth and Jessica (hinting that Ms. Finally a senior dating site for seniors by seniors! Aaron Dallas - Appears in a brief plot where Melissa Fox is trying to get back at her boyfriend and her friend Cherie Reese (who is interested in Aaron, who in turn likes tomboyish girls like Cherie). Lila Fowler - She and Jessica drifted apart and Lila is now a member of a clique with Melissa Fox. Senior Dating. Jeremy Aames- A student from Big Mesa High, the quarterback on their football team. He meets Jessica at a local coffee shop and the two begin to date (though they break up briefly and he dates Jade Wu). He is down to earth and serious about his studies. When his family ( consisting of his parents and two younger sisters) moves to Arizona, he chooses to stay in Sweet Valley to complete his senior year before joining them. This Senior personals site is an international senior singles website serving. Will Simmons- A student from El Carro High who transferred to SVH for his senior year after the earthquake. He becomes the star quarterback on the football time until an incident with Ken Matthews injures him to the point where he can no longer play. Initially bitter, he eventually overcomes his hatred for Ken (who felt so guilty, he quit the team when they needed him most) and comes back to unite the divided team (the SVH and El Carro students).
