Conflict finds itself between the Skywalker and Solo clans as each find themselves opposing the other during a volatile situation. A very violent ambush takes place at a unauthorized missile factory on planet Adumar. Jedi Knight Jacen Solo with his cousin, a young Ben Skywalker escape death narrowly. War seems imminent between a growing group of defiant planets. Some suspect that a new Empire could possibly be the result from the Galactic Alliance.

Jacen Solo locates a trail of clues that have with very disturbing revelations. Luke Skywalkers dream visions of a dark figure remind him of his father, Lord Darth Vader. Luke suspects that if his visions become a reality, both he and the galaxy will be entwined with pain.

Civil wars breaks out in the Galactic Alliance. Laws that are most repressive are passes as Terrorists strike out. Both the clans of Skywalker and Solo are divided. Unbeliveable Han Solo finds himself working with Boba Fett, his old foe. The two search for information regarding their children. Jedi Master Jacen Solo decides to make a choice in his life which in turn shocks both clans as well as the galaxy.

Fett decides to return to planet Mandalore in regards to both spending time with his new granddaughter and to unite the Nation of Mandalore. In order for Jacen to obtain the full ranking of a Sith Lord, he has to kill his only love, Tenel Ka and her daughter. By utilizing the walk through time, he "flow walks" to see what transpired to his grandfather. He believes now that his path is different and/or he does not want to repeat that Darth Vader did.

The Galactic Alliance is threatened by Civil WAr. Both Han and Leia Solo join forces with the insurgents of Corellia thus causuing grief to their families and to the Jedi. The Solos discover a plot by the Rebels to ally with the Hapan Consortium an ally with a deadly plot of the death of both the Queen an her daughter by the Hapan nobles.

Even though the Solos are determined to save the queen, their actions will result in friction that places them against each other. Brother against sister as well as Mother against son in future conflicts. The Dark Jedi Lumiya is a strong influence over Jacen Solo as his power of the dark side of the Force grows. Luke Skywalker shows great concern for his young nephew, Ben Skywalker. The Solos find themselves against their worst enemy, their very own son.

Jacen Solo is becoming more respected as well as admired with victory against the rebels of Corellia. Even though the relationships of both Skywalker and Solo clans are under pressure, unification of Han and Leia Solo along with Luke and Mara Skywalker remains. There is a strong suspicion that a individual seems to controlling the war via manipulation. Luke still sees a vision of darkness. He assumes that it is the Dark Lady of the Sith, Lumiya. Meanwhile, the Solos, Han and Leia are pursued by son Jacen after being the main suspects of a assassination plot against the Queen of the Hapes Consortium, Tenel Ka.

Ben soon returns from Ziost, via a Sith battle sphere he happened to chance upon. Jacen involves himself in the political aspects by the introduction of a new law which gives him the power to create and/or rewrite other laws thus superceding them. Cal Omas is arrested by Jacen and Admiral Niathal. They both install themselves as joint Chiefs of State. Boba Fett and his granddaughter Mirta locate a clone who found a way to stop the aging process. Skirata cures Fett and as a result, Fett gains another 30 years of life. The price Fett will pay for his cure it to unite the people of Mandalore. Jacen kills Mara Jade as his sacrifice. An enraged Luke hunts down Luiya and dills her. The fact that Ben was with Lumiya is revealed to Luke. Jacen Solo assumes his new name and title of the Sith: Darth Caedus.

Jacen now as the new Sith lord Darth Caedus, continually tries to restore the galaxy by taking it over. He path down the dark side will again lead him to sacrifice anyone and anything to achieve his goals. Jacens family and friends have all turned against him. Many atrocities are a result of Darth Caedus such as destroying the forests of planet Kashyyyk, home world of the Wookies.

Intimidation is one example of Caedus by executing one of his spies which the government of Corellia was going to expose. He intimidates others by letting them know that he can expose their past deeds if they choose to return to the Galactic Alliance. He orders the exections of all adult Jedi, even his own sister, Jaina after he sent troops to take control of the Jedi Praxeum on located on Ossus. He even subjects Ben to torture trying to make him a new a Sith apprentice. Luke Skywalker intervenes, a duel of lightsabers ensues ending in a draw only after the danger of Ben falling to the dark side is apparent to Luke. A subplot in the book reveals the existence of a hidden group of Sith on Korriban and further reveals the powers of Ship, the Sith vessel Ben recovers from Ziost.

Darth Caedus formulates a plan and kidnaps Allana, daughter of Tenel Ka after the Hapans decide to leave the Galactic Alliance. Darth Caedus on Coruscant battles a Jedi Strike team. Unfortunately for them, Caedus wins with aid from guards. The team loses Mithric, a Falleen Jedi after she has her head decapitated. Their only victory is by placing a tracking beacon on Caedus.

Han and his team of Leia, Jaina, Jag and Zekk discretely sneak on a spaceship, the Anakin Solo to obtain information regarding the Dark Jedi Alema Rar. She is tracked to the asteroid home of Lumiya where she is killed via Jag's Mandalorian Crushgaunts. The Jedi interfere in the middle of a battle between the Galactic Alliance and the Confederation over Centerpoint Station at Correllia. Allana is rescued from Caedus. Centerpoint Station is destroyed so that no one can use it ever again.

As the civil war transpires, no one can bring an end to the tyranny of Jacen Solo/Darth Caedus. His sister Jaina Solo desired to take him down. First off, she has to learn certain methods and skills unfamiliar to her. Ben Skywalker suspects that Jacen was the one responsible or the death of Mara, his mother.
