At Dance Athletics, there are no tryouts for the competitive team. However, after a few weeks into regular classes new students that wish to be competitive are evaluated and put into a suitable class for their level. For old students, they too are evaluated and chosen to be in extra classes, to perform solos, or move up a level in classes. But no matter what all the students chosen have an obligation to fulfill, and they must be dedicated to their dance.
Students who choose to be competitive, must practise on a regular basis, and attendance to class must be regular. If the staff feel that a student is not putting forth the proper effort, then a parent will be contacted. Either that student works harder in class or they will no longer participate. No money will be refunded.
The following is a list of responsibilities for a competitive dancer:
As competition can get very expensive, Dance Athletics, has created a dance education fund that raises money to help fund all the competitive dancers on the comittee. Anyone at the studio with a competitive dancer can join, and raise money to bring their competition fees down.
The studio generally attends 4 competitions a year, however not every dance attends every competition. They locations of the competitions differ every year, but they are all a lot of fun. Competitive dancers also participate in the year end recital, along with the recreational dancers.
Example (last years competition schedule):
1. Barrie, April 24-25
2. Newmarket, May 7-9
3. Rochester, Ny, May 15-16
4. Stratford, June 20
All the dance disciplines offered at Dance Athletics Inc. are available at a recreational level. In other words, the class of your choice is taken to have a lot of fun not to be competitive. Recreational dancers come to class to work out, learn new dance steps, meet new friends, increase flexibility, and develop a passion for the art of dance.
All recreational dancers participate in a class during the year, and can participate in the studios year end show. This requires a costume, but one that is generally kept at a low cost. The year end recital showcases all of the studio's dances, both competitive and recreational together.
