Dong Bei Cup 2005-Scouting report
Jeff Duyndam – Offensively gifted, but something must be done about that cocky laugh after he scores!

Adrian Conradi – same ol’, same ol’ – court always slanted in the offensive zone.

Jason Downie – Will he wait for another pass on a clear breakaway, again?

Blake Defieux – Will the “C” word return to full form in this year’s tournament?

Bobby Gibson – Will the lack of helmet and cage affect his play?

Chris Gibson – Blessed with all the offensive skills, but defensively could get on the horse a little more.

Paul Hughes – Can the rust be shaken off in time for a solid Dong Bei Cup performance?

Chris Loewen – Mr.“I-am-hurt-don’t-pick-me-tournament MVP” Loewen.  Don’t buy his sob story this year.

Tom Beeke – A lot of razzle, but sometimes too much dazzle.  Game shape could be a factor.

Kevin Chow – Offensively gifted, good team guy, oldest thirty-five year old in the tournament.

Simon Kissinger – Johnny Hussle will be there, as always, just don’t look for him to lead your team in points.

Michelle Harrison – Highest ranked female in the tournament, but just has to get that ball in the net!

Darren Brown – The one-eyed defensive machine is ready to go again – as solid of a d-man as you can get.

Brad Helgason – Can last year’s Dong Bei Ren (leading scorer) return to form?

Amanda Lapointe – Solid skills but has not played all year.

Shawn Forde – Don’t expect this guy to lead your team cheers but you can expect a “Steady Eddy” performance on the court.

Scott Pillsbury – Saw glimpses early on in the season but will the new phone rates hinder his performance?

Patrick Spensley  - All heart, solid skill, just needs to work on his short game around the green.

Caleb Morton – Can the best goalie in last year’s tournament do anything on the court as a player: most likely.

Dale Addis – Steady d-man but will have a lot to prove in the big show.

Trevor Pendergast – Good team guy that has greatly mellowed in his years.  C’mon it’s Pendergast!

Harry Nyugen – Dong Bei Cup veteran but have not seen him all year.

Jennifer Lee – If she knows where the ball hockey court is she might be okay.

Kathleen Robertson – Solid veteran player who has a Dong Bei Cup ring already on her finger.

Alan Corbett – Good player but a few less marathon shifts wouldn’t hurt.

Derek Duke – Great player but is he reliable in the clutch?

Shane Arishnekoff – Great two-way player but scheduling will be a factor.  On the DL as we speak.

Bobbi Donison – Looked great in the ten minutes she’s played all year.

Hans Davina – I have heard of this gentle giant, but have not seen those ‘Golden Hans’ on a hockey stick for a long time.

Curtis Friesen – Can Mr. Cool turn hot when it counts?

Grant Potter – Mr. Pottair! has worked on the O-game all year and can be Mr. Clutch when needed.

Marshall Bradbury – Can ol’ Li Hai get the motor running again this year, or has ping pong claimed his passion?

Paul Coffey – Great player but must shoot the ball more!

 Goalies

Gabe Kemp – Force him to slide into the high slot and then capitalize.

Craig Engleson – Plays like Tretiak....Nyet!  We hope come May he is half as good as April!

Bill Colorado – Drag his ass out of the net and into the corner and then capitalize!  As good as gold.

Doug Iwasaki – Could let in the odd softy, but once into the game as solid as it gets!

Ball Hockey Championships

The First Annual Dong Bei Cup was held beginning late May, 2004 and finished July 5th.   The Dongbei Cup was organized by Craig "The Stingin' Dragon" Engleson and is the offspring of the 2003 Summit Series in which the Kaifaqu Canadians defeated the Jinshitanheads in four straight games.  This year there were 4 teams competing for the coveted Dongbei Cup, all teachers at Maple Leaf International School.  The tournament is co-ed and inclusive (teams are a mixture of Ice Dragons and Dirt Dragons (ball hockey only players).

Highlights:

  • The high intensity ball hockey.
  • The non-stop hockey talk.
  • The number of enthusiastic spectators.
  • Chester's math class keeping stats.
  • Red Army taking down the White Devils in two straight in the finals (coming from 0-5 to win 6-5 in OT)
  • Dong Bei Ren trophy for top scorer awarded to Brad Helgeson (Red Army)
  • Chang Cheng (Great Wall) trophy for top goalie awarded to Caleb Morton (Red Army)
  • The chipped pyramid trophy (whatever it's called) awarded for heart to Chris Loewen (Red Army)
  • The controversy (goalie pads, disallowed goals, heated exchanges)

The final standings:

  1. Red Army
  2. White Devils
  3. Agent Orange
  4. Red Team

Scouting Report

The four goalies were faced with the awesome task of drafting teams on Friday May 21st.  Their scouting report follows:

Adrian Conradi – excellent in one of the creases, not both.

Alan Corbett – Solid two-way player, but rust could be an issue.

Alex Dick – Mike Bossy, or the Silver Fox, which one will show?   (Monday games are questionable.)

Allen Ma – Has the willingness to try and learn, but positioning could be a serious issue.

Billy Colorado – Big guy, big shot, big wind up – too big!

Blake Defieux – Excellent player (but has struggled lately); could pass the puck a little more as well.

Bobby Gibson – Excellent all round player with a solid shot.

Brad Helgason – Excellent player, great shot, weak shins.

Chris Loewen – When healthy as solid as it gets, but on one good leg his output will be minimal.

Dana Walters – solid two-way player.

Darren Brown – a lot of heart, too much maybe, and a solid defensive defenseman.

Doug Iwasaki – good skills but game conditioning could be a factor.

Grant Potter – A wild card pick – looks great in a SPAPS!       (Tuesday/Thursday’s has to work.)

Harry Nguyen – Pesky little guy who just won’t give up.

James Chester – Not a regular during the year, game conditioning (or lack thereof) a definite factor.

Jeff Duyndam – Great skills, drive questionable, and will miss Monday games.

Jen Pendergast – A lot of heart, solid skills but her positioning could be an issue.

Kathleen Robertson – solid skills but has not been out all season.

Kevin Chow – Great offensive prowess but is rarely seen in the corners; not one of Cherry’s boys.

Marshall Bradbury – Tough as nails, solid skills, game conditioning a question mark.

Michelle Harrison – excellent worker – plays better against husband and not with.

Paul Hughes – Good skills but game shape will be a serious issue.

Simon Kissinger – Work ethic not a problem here, great team guy.

Trevor Pendergast – Skills improving, count on ‘Mr. Snapshow’ to make an appearance every game.
