On Monday unfortunately I had to have Pebbles put down, he was fairly new and very scared and quiet. We found out his teeth were so over grown they were growing into his head. He had a discharge from his nose indicating it was quite severe. He was very fat though which doesnt correlate wth over grown teeth as they usually suffer eating. In his short stay Pebbles touched no hay, it seemed he had spent a long time not eating it and just enjoying his fatty feeds.
I urge you all to ensure every rabbit eats hay, it is so very sad to see such a very preventable death become apparent.
Well, I have my first exam tomorrow and I'm not ready! i It's 'Principles of welfare', not my worst subject though.
The giants went to a home on Sunday, where they're going to get LOADS of love, and Tiny is having her teeth removed. I'm collecting my first really aggressive rabbits tomorrow, two female lops. I'm going to add a 'Problem Bunny' page so you can keep up to date with their progress and get some ideas for any aggressive rabbits you meet in the future. I hope this gives people a real life, true account of how to deal with aggression.
Unfortunately I lost my beloved Jack this week, a real set back for a few days. but having so many mouths to feed makes you work through. I am considering keeping Jolson as I have really become attached to him, and he has excelled now he is used to my routine. I 'm going to get him castrated and really want to keep one of the babies or even two, but I have to be careful that my numbers don't creep up again. This week there are only a few, well, Nancy and the babies, Sophie, Lucy and Lou, Luna and Aqua, Blackberry, Scott, Donny, Jolson and Marmite, but on reflection that actually seems quite a lot!
we have 5 rats, 3 looking for homes and to be honest they make much better pets for children than rabbits. The arrival of Baby the parrot has made quite an impact. at the moment were planning to keep her, but she is only 5 and with another 40 years ahead of her it may become impractical.
I'm quite looking forward to the RSPCA day on Saturday. Unfortunately I have had to make a few rearrangements due to losing Jack but will be taking Donny and the babies. It would be great to see some of you there.
Anyway that's it for now, early night so I'm all fresh for tomorrow, Yeah right!
Well firstly Tiny and I were on TV!!!!! We went to Channel 5 studios with the two giants and met the vet, Joe Ingles, he gave me some advice on clipping her teeth and we successfully did it this morning, Tiny stuck her face straight into her bowl to fill her face, it had been so horrible watching her suffer and we decided that if we left it any longer she may die as she was so skinny. The vet agreed, clipping her teeth wasnt going to kill her, but not clipping them would.
We have a new litter here from a pair of females that came in pregnant, the owner said they didn't know the other rabbit they had was male. Yet another case of never lifting your bunny over even to check for a messy bum, some of the boys here are so well developed I'm baffled they're mistaken for does!
I started my first round of vaccinations, we got 8 done for £60 which wasnt too bad. I'm hoping to do the next round when we sell some babies. We havn't manged to home anyone recently - it peaks and drops quite regularly, but with my exams not too far away and I still have 3 essays to get in, I'm not really concentrating on the rescue at the moment.
