Hybrid High

The boarding school for hybrids

The story of Hybrid High

Chapter 1 – Rem

A lone girl walked in a desolate, but thick forest filled with singing birds and tasty fruits. But this girl was different. Placed in her straight, white, shoulder-length hair, were two white wolf ears and behind her was a bushy white tail. Her bare-footedness revealed large wolf paws and at her sides were claws on her hands, in lieu of nails. Also, on the sides of her cheeks were two gray marks made of not fur, but skin. Her green eyes sparkled with a mix of energy, alertness, and obstinacy. Below those beautiful eyes was a pink wolf nose, and below that was a mischievous grin. She was a Hybrid. Half-human, half-wolf.

For that very reason, humans feared her, wanted to capture her, wanted to kill her. They had already gotten to her parents when she was only ten. But she got away and started living in this forest, relying only on flora and fauna.

But one thing that sucked (as if her life didn’t suck already) was that she had no idea how hybrids even got on the earth. Were they here since the beginning of time, or did something happen? she asked herself.

The wolf girl sighed and plucked an apple off a thick branch of an old tree. She sat down and thought about her name. Her parents had given her the best name she could imagine. Remory. She loved it, because it rhymed with “memory.” But she called herself Rem for short.

Rem bit into the apple, cutting into it like butter with her sharp fangs. She finished it quickly and tossed the core to the side. Then she stood up and continued her stroll. Soon the roar of the ocean could be heard. How peaceful, she thought.

But Rem tensed as a figure came into view. A human! But no, it wasn’t a human. Well it wasn’t 100% human anyway.

Instead, it was a girl with orange tinted square glasses covering one green eye and one gray eye. Her hair was brown with two black highlights in the front, and it was in a short shaggy, boyish style. On her back were two large black raven wings that looked to have about a six feet wingspan. On her head were black wolf ears, and she had a brown wolf tail with a black tip. She was another hybrid.

Then the raven/wolf girl spoke. “Come with me if you want to live,” she said.

          “What?!” Rem cried, obviously startled.

“Sorry, I meant come with me if you want to be safe from humans. There really isn’t a difference, is there?”

“Who are you? And I’m perfectly safe here. I’ve never seen any humans around! Not in my forest!”

“Well they’re here now, so come on!” the girl persisted.

          “I still don’t know you’re name!”

          “Quit talking and start running!”

“I just wanna know your name!” Rem whined.

          The girl sighed. “I’m Myst.”

“Was that so hard? I’m Rem.” Then Rem ran off ahead of Myst and together they made their way to the beach.

They kept at a steady pace. Both of them were faster than humans, since they had wolf reflexes. They also had bigger chests to take in more air.

On their way, they heard a gunshot and a flock of birds flew out of the trees close by.

“Damn it! There are humans here!” Rem yelled.

“Keep quiet!” Myst shushed and gave Rem an “I told you so” look.

Soon they got to the beach. On the beach, a small boat was waiting for them. They quickly boarded, but waited.

“Umm… Just what are we waiting for?” Rem asked.

          “Lukino,” was the quick reply.

“Who-” But Rem was cut off as a boy crashed out of the forest.

The boy- Lukino- had bluish-sliver horns on his head, pointed ears, blue dragon wings, a bluish-silver spike on his back, and shoulder-length black hair.

A dragon boy! Rem thought, astonished.

As he fainted, Rem could see a bullet in his wing and cuts all over he’s slightly blue skin.

“Oh my God, Lukino has been shot!” Myst shouted, which was the loudest thing she’s said so far.

Soon after, three humans with guns busted out of the woods. Rem ran into the forest as the humans pointed their guns at Myst.

“Rem!” was the last thing she heard Myst scream from the beach.

What am I going to do? she asked herself. If I go back I’ll surely die, but if I don’t, the others will die! I have to go back!

So she turned around and sprinted back, making her feet move as fast as they could. She ended up behind the humans. She pushed one, who crashed into the other two, and when they were on the ground, she bit the biggest guy’s throat, ending his life.

The other two ran in fear, leaving their guns behind. Rem wiped the blood off her lips and went to help Luke.

Myst nodded, and jogged to where Luke lay. Together, they carried him onto the boat and into a little cabin where a simple bed was. They laid him down as the driver turned around from the steering wheel. Rem finally got a good look at him.

He was another hybrid. This one had black bear ears and big bear claws. His brown hair was combed back, keeping it out of his gray eyes which showed hardly any emotion.

“What happened?” the half-bear, half-human asked in a gruff voice.

Luke got hurt. We need to get back to the school immediately,” Myst replied.

“School?” Rem echoed. “Wait a minute. Just where are we going?”

          “Hybrid High.”

If you want to know what happens, you'll have to wait 'til I publish the book! =P
