This winter, we have been working to reline an 800 metre stretch of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal in Llangattock Powys, as well as carrying out other repairs to the canal wall. It’s the biggest project that we’ve undertaken this winter, the works started in November and are expected to finish at the end of March, and we will be opening up the drained canal for visitors to walk in before we refill it.
Visitors to the Llangattock open day will be able to walk along the bottom of the drained canal and see up close the extensive works we’ve done here and learn about why they are so important. Experts from the Trust will be on hand to explain about these works and the our environment team will also be giving talks about the wide variety of wildlife found along the Mon & Brec. A large fish tank will also be on site so visitors can see the fish species that are found in the Mon & Brec canal.
Visitors will also be able to walk around the lime kilns on site and talk to our heritage advisor about the restoration works we’ve undertaken to the lime kilns and their history. Lime mortaring demonstrations will be taking place here are well.
Additionally, Arts Alive Wales will have their horsebox studio on site in which visitors will be able to learn about the Limelight project.
