Charlottesville, Virginia birth doula

What is a labor doula?
A labor doula is a person knowledgeable and experienced in the birth process who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth.

What does a doula cost?
This varies from area to area and doula to doula. The fee is based on the experience your doula has, as well as the going rate in your area. The basic range in Virginia is anywhere from $300-$1000. Most doulas will barter, set up a sliding scale, or payment plans to help those who can't afford a doula. So, do not let this keep you from hiring a doula. As i've stated on my "services and fee's" page, I offer FREE services for teen moms, active military, and low income mommies.

Does having a doula really lower the chance of medical intervention?
Yes, it does. Having a doula has been proven to give a:

  • 50% reduction in cesarean rates
  • 25% shorter labor
  • 60% reduction in epidural requests
  • 40% reduction in oxytocin (pitocin) use
  • 30% reduction in analgesia use
  • 40% reduction in forceps delivery

Will you take on clients last minute?
While I prefer to get to know my mommies-to-be, I will not turn you away if you are in need. I am more then happy to accomodate mom and dad even with little notice. I just ask that you try and fill me in as much as possible, as to what you do and don't want during your delivery.

Please note that the fee will not be discounted, and payment will be expected right away (execpt for those who fall in the special circumstance category).

Can you help me with the baby?
Doulas LOVE newborn babies. It is my pleasure to offer guidance with everything from breastfeeding, to bath time, diapering and swaddling. I am also up to date with the current baby care techniques and child related topics. I would be happy to care for your baby while you nap or shower. Afterall, when mommy is happy EVERYONE is happy!
