Common misconceptions Some expectant fathers are concerned that hiring a labor assistant undermines his job as coach. This is a common misconception. The fact is that a professional labor support person assists the father by making practical suggestions so he can better help his partner, "spells" him when necessary, and frees him to participate in ways in which he is most comfortable without compromising the needs of the laboring woman. Having a doula present allows the father to concentrate all his energies on his partner while the doula advocates on their behalf by reminding other members of the birth team of the birthing couple's wishes.
A doula does not replace or interfere with the father; An intuitive doula can actually bring a couple closer together during this exciting time. This is an amazing and challenging time for both mother and father. Fathers worry, often finding it difficult when they are unable to take away the physical pain their wife is going through. A doulacan assist him to care for, and support his partner often making suggestions for comfort techniques, position changes, giving encouragement reassurance, and needed breaks during a long labour.
She helps the father to be more involved as the nurses cannot be with the birthing woman at every moment. In essence, freeing up the father to provide uninterrupted emotional support to his partner, and not having to play the role of advocate, liaison, etc...as well as provide support.
