The Bill Scobie Memorial Trophy for Modelling Excellence

Following the loss of our long term member and friend Bill Scobie in December 2003, we decided as a club to dedicate a trophy in his memory. Bill had an attention to detail that was second to none, and his passion for building layouts was obvious in "Feather River" our HO American layout, and "The Albula Line" an HOm Swiss layout which is now in private hands. The trophy is awarded by the club at our annual exhibition for modelling that is of a very high standard. The winner in chosen by members of the club and presented on Saturday afternoon.

This was first introduced at our show in 2004 and was awarded to Peter Page of the East Neuk model railway club. In 2005 it was Edinburgh & The Lothians Miniature Railway Club with Caeredwyn.

At Cupar Model Rail 2006, the winner of "The Bill Scobie Memorial Trophy for Modelling Excellence" was awarded to Pentland MRG with there layout Strath-inch.

2007 brought exhibitors from all over Scotland, we decided to change the way we voted for the trophy. We asked one of our traders to look through the many excellent layouts in the show, to pick out the winner of the "The Bill Scobie Memorial Trophy for Modelling Excellence" independent from the club. The judge voted and awarded it to Pentland MRG. Well done to Andy and Brian.

Scottish Ivatt, Class 2MT 2-6-0sBy Iain A H Smith

Iain A H Smith, one of our longest serving members in the club, recently published a book on the Class 2MT 2-6-0 Ivatt Class locomotive.

The book has over 60 photographs, many previously unpublished, detailed captions to each picture, descriptions of some of the long-lost Scottish branch lines upon which these locomotives worked, a map showing these lines, and appendices of build dates, shed allocations and withdrawal dates.

The author, Iain A H Smith, has spent many years researching the history of these engines and finding sorces of photographs of them at work. He has also worked on the footplate on a heritage railway in Scotland and has travelled extensively worldwide in search of steam.

He is a director of The Carmyllie Pilot Company Ltd. In July 2000 the Company was set up to restore and subsequently operate No. 46464, one of the engines allocated to Scotland in 1950. This engine had become known as 'The Carmyllie Pilot' during its time working the little-known Carmyllie branch in Angus. Upon withdrawal it was fortunately saved and worked for a time on the Strathspey Railway. Following purchase by The Carmyllie Pilot Company it was moved to a private site near to its old haunts where work continues on a thorough overhaul, including extensive work to the boiler.

Proceeds from the sale of this book will help fund the overhaul and return to steam of this locomotive.

After a review of the OO gauge layout we were building, it was decided after much debate ti abandon the build. Strip down to the base boards and commence the constuction of two brand new layouts. We are keeping these underwraps for now, but more info will be posted here soon.
