There were four different age groups, and the tournament was played over five rounds with each round timed at 30 minuets for the whole game, (rapid play). This is the first time Cumnor Chess Club has been involved in the tournament and was represented by six of its juniors, all of whom did extremely well.

Inter association championship - Under 11's Final 2009

The Oxfordshire Under 11’s team competed in the Final of the 2009 Inter Association Championships on 9th May at High Wycombe, along with 15 other Counties. There were three rounds played with 50 minuets on each clock. There were 20 players and 4 reserves in each team. The reserves had their own individual tournament, of which Oxon reserves finished in 7th place. The Oxon team Captain, rotated the reserves into the main team in round two, for one game. Cumnor Chess Club had three juniors in the Oxon squad: Louis Hampden, David Sterrie and Susana Bennett Anton. Louis played on board eight and won all three of his games. Louis was one of only two Oxon players who won all three rounds. David played on board 15, but despite playing extremely well, did not manage to gain a win. His final game took over 1 hour to play out, which at this level is exemplary. Susana won two games, both on board 21, but lost a game on board 18, which was a superb effort.

On Saturday 2nd May, the Oxfordshire 2009 Mega Final took place at the Oxford Community School, Cowley.

The club held the initial stage of this competition over January through to March, as did all clubs and schools across the UK involved in the tournament.

This year there were over 6,000 schools and clubs in the 2009 nationwide tournament.

The Oxfordshire Mega Final had 194 entrants, which was a record entry for the County.

The Oxon Mega Final was separated into age/gender groups, and played over six rounds in a Swiss tournament, not a knockout tournament. Swiss tournament means that everyone plays the six rounds irrespective of their result. For example; if a players wins their first match they will play an opponent in the second round who has also won their first match. Conversely, if a player loses their first match, they play a player who has done the same, and so on.

Cumnor Chess Club had eight juniors in this years Mega Final, which is a record entry for the club. I'm pleased to inform you this years results were the clubs best results since we started entering juniors in the British Land Chess Challenge, since 2007.

I'm extremely pleased to announce that Hugo Thessieu came first in the Boys Under 9's with five points out of six, and won the accolade of Supremo.

Each winner in each age/gender group wins the Supremo/a title.

Players achieving 3 and 3.5 points were awarded a rosette; players achieving 4 points or more also qualified for the Giga Final in July. The Giga Final is separated between the Counties of the North and the South of England. The best players from these two tournament qualify for the Terra Final, which will be hosted in Warwick in August, with a top prize of £2,000. There are many cash prizes, which start from the Giga Final in July.

Oxfordshire Junior Chess Congress 2009

This years Oxfordshire Junior Chess Congress was held at Abingdon School for Boys, and was played over 8th & 9th April, with 5 rounds played each day. The club had four of it's juniors in the tournament, three of which played in the Under 11's section along with Enzo competing in the Under 9's. Hugo could have dropped into the under 9's on the second day of the Congress, as did a number of entrants within his age group. But Hugo decided to continue in the Under 11's section, playing along side his club mates David and Susana, and along with a school mate of his, Matthew Lock, who was one year older than Hugo and was not allowed to drop down to the Under 9's. If Hugo had dropped down to the Under 9's section, he would have most probably won it. Well done Hugo for a brave desicion to continue in the Under 11's.

CumnorChessClub News

The clubs British Land UK Chess Challenge 2009 was won by Louis Hampden with 19 points. Patrick came second with 18 points and Tom third with 17 points. Congratulations to Louis, and to all the junior players for making this years tournament extremely competitive. The tournament saw a few upsets, David, (16 pts), managed a very good draw against Patrick, Louis beat Patrick and Tom won against Louis. The club had eight juniors in the Oxon Mega Final. The results are shown below on the left hand side of the screen.

_________

Next season the club will be entering two teams in the Oxfordshire Chess Association League. Cumnor 2 will be captained by Liam Glenn. We can presume, both Cumnor 1 and 2 will be playing in Division 4 in the 09/10 season, which starts this October. This move will give many more of the clubs members regular league match play. For those of you who have only played a few matches this season, you will find that you will get plenty of matches next season. For the juniors who do not get matches, then now is the time to start to improve. If you catch Liams eye, then you  might just possibly be picked  to play in a match? This is a great opportunity for all the juniors at the club.

_________

Susana won two out of her three matches in the 2009 EPSCA, (English Primary School Chess Association), Inter Association Championhips, for the Oxon Girl's Under 11 team, held in Bolton on 28th March. She won against Liverpool and Sussex, playing on board 9 in a 12 player team. Full results of all Oxon's individual players in the Tournament will be published as soon as available.

Oxfordshire Girls Under 11's came 7th.

Final position:

Kent 28 points

Wey Valley 26.5

Manchester 22.5

Nottingham 20.5

Liverpool 20.5

Sussex 20

Oxfordshire 19

Oldham 16

Barnett 15.5

Berkshire 13.5

Yorkshire 9

Lincolnshire 4

You can see how close it was between the Counties in 3rd and 7th place. Only 3.5 points separated 3rd from 7th. Over the three rounds this eqautes to only one win extra per round plus the draw.
