LEAGUE PLAY-OFF (Keswick, September 13th)

Penrith Gold 105-5 (Greg Hall 30ret, Richard Sykes 23, Zak Jones 2-16, Lewis Hull 2-19) v Workington 69ao (Josh Steele 12, Liam Armstrong 16, Richard Sykes 4-1-10-4, Ben Dixon 4-1-14-3, Greg Hall 3.5-0-21-2)

On a lovely September morning, Penrith won the toss and elected to bat on a slightly damp wicket. The innings was built around a fine partnership from Greg Hall (30 retired) and Richard Sykes, who after a slow start reached a very respectable 23. Workingtons bowling attack was unable to put Penrith under any sustained pressure, Oliver Wilson (4 overs for 6 runs) being the only bowler to really contain the batsmen.

In reply Workington set about chasing a good score in positive fashion but no batsmen was really allowed to settle, Josh Steele (12) and Liam Armstrong (16) top scoring. Penriths bowlers concistently put the ball on the spot and used the slower delivery well - three wickets falling to catches induced by a slower ball. In all, Penrith took seven catches with Tom Grisedale taking two including an outstanding diving catch. Richard Sykes rounded off a good game with 4 for 10 and was ably supported by Ben Dixon (3 for 14) and Greg Hall (2 for 21) as Penrith closed out the Workington reply in 16 overs.

Wigton began steadily reaching 27-1 in the seventh over before two wickets in successive balls brought the game back into balance.  Jackman with 18 took Wigton to the brink of a win and found an ally in Atkinson as they added a vital 13 runs for the eighth wicket.  Wigton needed 17 from the last 2 overs and drew level with one ball remaining.  Jason Israel bowled the final ball and completed a run out (the fourth of the innings) to end the game level

Just when it seemed as if the home side had applied the brakes Will Ford and Jonny Norman provided some impetus with Norman finishing unbeaten on 15 after having also bowled very well earlier in the match. Seascale 61ao (Will King 30ret, Zak Jones, Matthew McGarry & Tom Powell 2 wickets each) v Workington Blue 63ao (Zak Jones 14, L Spencer & L Jackson 2 wickets each) Workington won the toss and elected to bat. They were soon in deep trouble at 24-6 due to a combination of tidy bowling from all the Seascale bowlers and indifferent shot selection. James Wallace, Zak Jones (14 including a 6) and Jonny Schers provided some resistance to get Workington up to 63. L Spencer and L Jackson were the most succesful bowlers. Seascales reply was based around a fine 30 retired from Will King including a six and 3 fours- his third sizeable knock this season. However, a steady fall of wickets left Seascale needing four to win with their last pair batting. Several unsuccesful stumping and LBW appeals added to the tension before a little indecision resulted in a run out to hand the game to Workington by 2 runs. Seascale will take great heart from their performance and were somewhat unfortunate not to take all the points.

The game was also played in a excellent spirit and was another good advert for cricket in our league
Keswick 155 for5 (A.Hickey33retired, M.Clark32retired, J.Creighton22) v Seascale 62 all out (M.Clark 3 for 1, S.Sharp 5 for 2) Sam Sharps 5 wickets included 4 wickets in the last over taking a hat-trick in the process against a Seascale side who were determined not to give their wickets away, and whose attitude was first class.
Workington Blue 89-4 v Egremont 74-4 An excellent partnership from Liam Irving and James Wallace batting at 5 and 6 put 54 runs on the board both remaining unbeaten to give workington a decent total. Ellis Gribbin posted 20 for Egremont but the workington bowlers gave little away and left the egremont side requiring too many in the last few overs

In response Joe Riley opened with some excellent hitting, retiring on 30, which was backed up by some excellent batting from Luke Close & Craig Sharpe, who also both retired. Some accurate bowling in the middle of the cleator innings by Josh Cape (3-12) helped swing the advantage towards Workington. A superb catch from Oliver Wilson, to dismiss Newbiggin, finally broke Cleator's Resistance

Cleator 112-7 v Keswick 105-4 Joe Riley top scored for Cleator with a big hitting 30 ret and Danny Hodgson, batting at number 8 scored a much needed 24no. N.Hurton returned 3-20 for Keswick. Sam, Sharpe and Robbie Bland 22 & 27 respectively got Keswick off to a good start followed by Matthew Clark with 21. A great game of junior cricket saw Keswick needing 11 to win off the last over but falling short by 7
Cockermouth 158-7 (Jack Spiers 33 ret, Peter Wilson 30ret, Thomas Elliot 30ret) v Seascale 73-6 (T king 32ret) Thomas Elliot, batting at number 11 hit a remarkable 30 in just 11 balls - one of the fastest retirements recorded in the league.
Egremont 90ao (L Cruden 16 H Page 18) v Whitehaven 96-5 (Will Benson 31 ret, Kyle Henderson 18, D Burrow 2-6) A very exciting game saw Egremont come within 6 runs of chasing down a competitive total of 96 set by Whitehaven. Whitehaven innings started well with opener Kyle Henderson scoring 18 but the real impetus came from Will Benson who retired for an excellent 31. Egremont most successful bowler was Daniel Burrows with 2 wkts for 6 runs in his 2 overs. Egremont set about the chase with purpose and all batsmen got in and the most telling contributions came from Howard Page (18) and Lee Cruden (16) but they eventually ran out of overs. Whitehaven's fielding was the key difference and it resulted in getting 4 key run outs.
Workington Blue 74ao (Lewis Hull 16 Matthew McGarry 13 Matthew Fowler 2-13) v Workington 114-3 (Daniel Robson 30 ret, Jack Richardson 18 not out, Oliver Wilson 17 not out Liam Armstrong 2-12) A keenly contested game between Workington & Workington Blue.  Workington Blue siezed the early initiative restricting Workington to 20-3 off 4 overs, but an excellent partnership of 60  between Daniel Robson (30 ret) & Oliver Wilson (17 not out), gave Workington the advantage, eventually finishing on 114 - 4.  Liam Armstrong was the pick of the bowling, with 4-0-12-2. In response Matthew McGarry got the Blue innings off to a good start, with a succession of quick boundaries, but some accurate bowling by Workington helped keep their response in check, Workington Blue eventually finishing all out for 74.  Pick of the bowlers was Matthew Fowler 4-0-13-2

Cleator v Workington No Play - Rain
Cockermouth 108-4 (Jonny Norman 33ret, Dan Poole 22no, William Ford 21, Matthew Smith 2-5) v Workington Blue 107-4 (Zak Jones 30ret, Liam Irving 30ret, Dan Poole 2-23) A superb game of under 13 cricket which Cockermouth won with one ball remaining. Batting first, Workingtons innings was based around a partnership from Zak Jones and Liam Irving, both of whom retired on 30 after playing a good mixture of strokeplay coupled with resolute defence to good bowling. Cockermouth opener William Ford batted solidly, playing several nice legside shots in his 21. Jonny Norman first four scoring shots were all 4's as he powered to 33 and kept Cockermouth in line with the asking rate. Matthew Smith bowled four excellent overs of line and length and was rewarded with the days best bowling figures of 2 for 5. However, a brisk 22 not out from Dan Poole saw Cockermouth home with one ball to spare and rounded of a good day for Poole who also chipped in with two wickets.

Egremont v Workington Blue No Play - Rain
Keswick v Cleator No Play - Rain
Seascale 68-5 (Will King 21 E. Malloy 3 - 19 J. Welford 1 - 5 L. Skilbeck 1 - 7) v Cockermouth 58ao (D. Poole 16 Billy Grant 2 - 5 Tom King 1 - 3 Clare Jackson 1 - 22) A day for the bowlers at Seascale. After being put in to bat, Seascale scored  quickly while Will King was at the crease. One he was out though, tight bowling restricted the scoring over the last overs limiting the score to 68-5. When Cockermouth batted, they were quickly on the back foot after losing a couple of early wickets. D. Poole bought some stability back to the innings but when he was out tight fielding from Seascale (which resulted in six run outs) saw Cockermouth all out for58, ten  short of the Seascale total.
Workington  60-5 (Daniel Robson 25 Shannon Rumney 4-1-5-2 J Bowden 3-0-11-2) v Whitehaven 57ao (Dean Henderson 22 Jack Richardson 2-7 Oliver Wilson 4-2-5-2 Jack Rumney 1-1-0-2) A good low-scoring encounter between two excellent teams.  Whitehaven batted first and were well led by Dean Henderson (22).  Unfortunately wickets kept falling at the other end, preventing Whitehaven from gaining any momentum, eventually closing on 57 all out.  Some excellent fielding & bowling by a keen Workington side, with notable performances from Oliver Wilson 4-2-5-2, Jack Richardson 4-0-7-2, and Jack Rumney 1-1-0-2.  In response Workington's innings was built around a strong partnership of 37 by Daniel Robson 25, and Oliver Wilson 12 not out.  Some excellent bowling from Shannon Rumney 4-1-5-2 was not enough to prevent her from finishing on the losing team
