Contrasting Styles of Obama, Prince, and Tiger Woods
Culturevital President Barack Obama's high-tech savvy style helped win the 2008 presidential election. Obama's understanding of the potential of social media to communicate and to raise funds, shines a spotlight on his knowledge of today's high technology. Obama's presidential victory was due, in a large part, to his strategic use of online media, which allowed him to deliver his message to millions of voters quickly and simutaniously. His powerful techno-demographic appeal fashioned his triumph into the first presidential election that was won on the Internet. And his high-tech savvy style continued to show during October 2009, when the Nobel Peace Prize winner announced plans to invest billions of dollars in energy-efficiency grants for "smart meters," high tech transformers, and other advanced devices that will promote upgrades to the nation's electric grid and will make it easier to integrate solar and wind elements as forms of renewable energy. The former Senator of Illinois was elected 44th president of the United States on November 4, 2008 as his message of change resonated with Americans all across the nation. Obama's campaign speeches distanced him from the political culture that he said prizes the inconsequential at the expense of the important. Obama challenged voters to rise above cynicism and selfishness. He offered words of inspiration and hope for a new politics of citizen engagement that can transform the country. Obama's vibrant style has generated considerable enthusiasm with independents, middle-age Iowans, and young students on college campuses as a president who promises the sharpest break from the polarized politics of the past decade. The Thrilling World of Sports
- Green Bay Packers were hosted Nov. 26 by the Detroit Lions at Ford Field during which this year's United Way Thanksgiving halftime show presented a Motown 50th anniversary tribute. Six current Universal Motown Records singers - Melanie Fiona, Kem, Shontelle, Forever The Sickest Kids, Vita Chambers and Hal Linton - performed classics from the golden era of Motown. Jadyn Maria, another Motown singer-songwriter, sung the national anthem. Something about the music must have turned the Packers on as they finished the NFL game with a 34-12 win over the Lions. Aaron Rodgers matched a career high with three touchdown passes and Charles Woodson grabbed two of his team's four interceptions, which help to give the Packers their victory by a 22 point lead.
- Tiger Woods is scheduled to speak at, and host, the Chevron World Challenge - an invitation-only exhibition - that has benefited his charitable foundation since 1999. However Woods appearance is now in question since experiencing a car crash that hospitalized him. The tournament is scheduled for Dec. 3-6. It features a field of 18 players competing for $5.75 million. Early rounds will be televised on the Golf Channel cable network.
- Detroit Pistons will have to do without small forward Tayshaun Prince for the time being, due to a small disk rupture in his lower back. The Pistons announced after an MRI exam confirmed the injury, that Prince will be out indefinitely. Prince's streak of 436 consecutive starts ended November 3rd, in a home victory over the Orlando Magic. He missed the next two games - both losses - and he has been replaced in the lineup by rookie Jonas Jerebko, who has been backed up by first-round pick Austin Daye. Pistons Rip Hamilton is due to recover from an ankle injure by mid December.
- LeBron James, the NBA sharp shooter, reportedly still hasn't signed a contract extension to play for Cleveland. The Cavaliers offered James a contract extension on July 18, and James can sign the extension offer anytime before June 30, 2010. The 24-year-old James will make $15.7 million next season and has a one-year option for $17.1 million. But came he stay focused long enough to truly earn his NBA pay? James told reporters, "I've never crossed paths with Braylon (Edwards) before, but it seems there is a little jealousy going on with Braylon and me and my friends." The Cleveland Cavaliers star's statement came after he called NFL Cleveland Brown receiver Braylon Edwards "childish" for allegedly punching one of James' friends at a club in early October.
- Serena Williams, 28, reclaimed the world number one ranking from Russia's Dinara Safina, lost it to her one week later, then reclaimed it again on Wednesday, Oct. 28 when Dinara Safina withdrew from WTA Sony Erecsson Championships because of a back injury. Serena Williams, a 11- time Grand Slam champion, also has three Wimbledon titles. As if tennis titles and a part-ownership of the Miami Dolphins aren't enough, Serena has teamed up with Mission Skincare to add a skincare product line to her long list of accomplishments. Mission Skincare is designed for people who are often active in the sunlight. Superstar tennis player Serena, is also an actress and clothing designer who'd like to get back to the TV script treatment she has in the works.
