Asian American Studies Students Association (AASSA)

 

 

Aassa’s Mission

 

Our Mission is to help build the Asian American Studies (AAS) major.  Moreover, through working with the AAS department, we seek to develop student activism and community service. AASSA also maintains the Asian American Studies Activities Center (otherwise known as the Asian House), which serves as a central meeting place and resource center for students in Asian American Studies classes and members of Asian American clubs. 

 

Programs and Services

 

AASSA has several plans for the 2005-2006 academic year.  Building on the success of similar past events we want to host a welcome back barbeque at the Asian House, where the AAS department and other Asian American affiliated organization can provide information and recruit possible members.  We seek to build cultural awareness through two events in the Spring, an event celebrating the Thai/ Cambodian New Year and a festival for Asian Pacific American heritage month in May.  Additionally, our organization plans a field trip to San Francisco to tour historical sites such as Angel Island Immigration Station.  AASSA also seeks to develop an “Asian Pacific Islander Graduation,” as an alternative to the larger and often impersonal graduation ceremonies of the individual colleges.  Also, AASSA plans to paint a mural, to highlight the AAS major and the experiences/ contributions of Asian Pacific Americans.

 

AASSA also wants to promote awareness of Asian Pacific Americans through guest speakers and a film series,. Finally, AASSA plans to implement a tutoring program for students taking Asian American Studies courses.

 

Purpose of Programs and Services

 

The purpose of AASSA’s programs and services is to spread awareness about the Asian American Studies major and to increase campus connections with Asian American communitiesin the San Fernando Valley.  That purpose is achieved through supporting student events and activities that increase cultural awareness about Asian Americans.  The activities of AASSA provide an enriching experience for all CSUN students by exposing them to new knowledge and issues.
