Note: The pattern below is offered mostly in "long hand" to make it easier on those who have difficulty reading crochet patterns. This pattern utilized the "Crunch Stitch," so named because the smaller stitch pulls the taller stitch down, slanting/crunching it. The trick, for the textured effect, is to ensure you do not work into the slant that is caused by the slip stitch pulling the half double crochet downwards. You will want to ensure you're only working into the top two loops of the stitch.
Additional Notes: This scarf is started and ended row by row. Because of this you will want to ensure you leave enough beginning and ending tail, about 8"-10" in length, that will later be utilized as fringe. The beauty of this is you get to determine the scarf length by determining the number of starting chains -- just be sure it's an odd number!
Row 1: Working into the back hump of the foundation chain, starting in 2nd ch from hook sc across. End off, leave a long tail. Row 3-9: Join second color choice to work, and create a half double, and then in the next stitch a slip stitch. Do this across the entire row. If you ended with a half double, then chain 1, turn and create a slip stitch into the top of that half double crochet, and then start your alternating stitch routine. If you ended with a slip stitch, chain 2, turn your work and create a half double into that last slip stitch, then in the next stitch create a slip stitch, and then start your alternating routine of half doubles & slip stitches. Repeat this for all six rows. When you get to the end of Row 10, finish off leaving a long tail.
Row 2: Turn work, join on new yarn. Single crochet across to end, ending off and leaving a long tail.
Row 10: With your first color, leaving a long tail, connect to your work and create the Crunch stitch across. (if you want a narrow scarf, end off the color here leaving a long tail. Otherwise, create 2-4 more rows for a wider scarf).
Row 11: This time, with your starting color, turn your work and create a row of single crochets across going into both loops of the starting chain. Remember to leave long tails.
Row 12-18: These rows are worked one same instructions as Rows 3-9 using your second color choice.
Row 19:This row is worked the same as Row 10.
