This set utilizes what is known as the Bushy Stitch. The Bushy Stitch consists of 2 double crochet stitches, 2 chains, and a single crochet all worked in the same stitch/space as the directions indicate. (Note: For those familiar with how multiples work and want to make blanket bigger for larger babies, the Bushy Stitch has a multiple factor of 3 + 3.)
Note: It is recommended that all work be created into the back hump of the foundation chains. This will eliminate the work from stretching and having unplanned "holes."
This pattern was designed by Dee in 2002 for the preemie babies born at the Danbury, CT, hospital.
Materials:
For blanket & hat, crochet hook size F or G
Fingering or Sport weight (acrylic or cotton) yarn in complimenting or contrasting colors
Tapestry needle
Blanket:
Loosely Chain 60 stitches.
Foundation Row: Working in back hump of ch, in 3rd ch from hook, (dc, ch 2, sc), *skip 2 ch, (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) in next st, repeat from * across.
Row 2: Ch 3, turn, in each ch-2 SP create Bushy (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) across.
Repeat Row 2 until when work is folded diagonal edges match up to create perfect triangle. (approx. 33 rows total)
For Edging, create Bushy from corner to corner (approximately 17), with 2 Bushy clusters in each corner. For blanket to be considered for preemie, it should measure between 18" and 24" square. Results will vary depending upon the fiber, hook, and gauge of the individual crocheter.
Open-Top Preemie Cap:
Some of preemies are so wired up that it is necessary to attach monitoring wires to their heads. This cap, since the top is open, allows for those monitor wires to pass through while offering a comfortable fit for the baby.
Loosley Chain 35.
Foundation Row: Working in back hump of ch, in 3rd ch from hook hdc, *ch 1, sk 1, hdc in next st, repeat from * across.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn; sc in each hdc and ch-sp across.
Row 3: Ch 3, turn; Bushy in 1st st, * sk 2 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) in next st, repeat from * across.
Row 4-10: Ch 3, turn, in each ch-2 SP create Bushy (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) across. Do not finish off yet.Ch 3, turn, in each ch-2 SP create Bushy (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) across.
After the last row has been completed, fold work in half. The top of the fold should have the hdc sts at the top, and the last series of sts created on the bottom. The crease from the fold should be on the side. Loosely sl st edges together until you have reached the top (where your Foundation Chain is). Chain 3 and repeat Row 3. Finish off and secure tails.
With ribbon, or with an 18" crocheted chain, weave in and out of the hdc posts. Gently pull ends together to close top; tie ends together and create a pretty bow.
