Technology and Distance Learning (TDL) SIG Webletter

Editor's Corner

Welcome Message From the 2007-2008 Technology Distance Learning SIG Leader

Hi everyone—my name is Melissa Burgess and I will be serving as the new Technology and Distance Education SIG leader.  I am thrilled to be a member of CRLA, and am even more thrilled to be part of such an exciting special interest group.  I do, however, have a confession to make.  I have not always enjoyed technology.  Five years ago if you asked me where to find the button that changes the font in Word, I would not have had the first clue as to where to begin finding it.  Through much trial and error, exploration and continued education, I have learned more about technology than I thought I ever would.  While taking an online graduate course, The Nature of Literacy in a Digital World at the University of Missouri, we were asked to create webpages, upload videos, create blogs, engage in discussion via chat and discussion board and search for classroom websites that supported literacy.  This instant immersion into technology enticed and thrilled me and the rest is history—I’ve been hooked ever since.

A little bit about myself.  I am a doctoral student with Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX as well as an instructor in Developmental Reading and Reading in the Content Areas.  My goal is to obtain my doctorate, and to teach literacy and technology courses.  I have been married for sixteen years and have four children ages 15, 13, 5, and 2.  I lead a busy life, but really wouldn’t have it any other way.  When I have time, I enjoy antique shopping, gardening, reading and traveling.

I have already had the opportunity to meet several wonderful people in our SIG, as well as other members from all over the nation at the recent CRLA conference in Oregon.  I brought back great ideas and a revived motivation and dedication toward helping college students achieve their academic goals.

As I acquaint myself with the responsibilities of being a SIG leader, you have my word that I will try to represent the SIG to the best of my ability.  I look forward to collaborating with you toward the common goal of increasing membership and support for our SIG. I envision this electronic newsletter/website to be a compilation of contributions from members, so please feel free to offer any suggestions.  As I raise my virtual glass, I wish everyone a wonderful and productive year.  Please feel free to contact me at mburgess2004@yahoo.com
