A Little Bit About Me

Growing Up

I am the oldest of 2 kids.  I have a brother who is 18 months younger than me.  We grew up in Virginia Beach, VA in a Navy family.  Childhood was pretty normal. 

I graduated high school in 1989 and started Nursing School that fall.  I didn't make it very far.  Second semester I dropped out.  Instead I went to Cosmetology School.  I graduated in the spring of 1991 and went right to work.

Adult Life - Part I

In August of 1991 I got married.  My mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer earlier in the summer and was undergoing treatments. 

Married life started out kind of rough.

In December of 1991, my husband was hurt badly at work.  It was almost a year before he could walk well enough to return to work.  We weren't able to live on our own financially, so we lived with my parents. 

My husband and my mom, both being at home all day, grew very close.

In the spring of 1992, mom was diagnosed as being terminal.  She made the decision to discontinue treatments and enjoy what time she had left.  She spent my dad's 50th birthday that October in the hospital with fluid in her lungs.

Although I could tell she wasn't feeling well, we spent the day Christmas shopping together in early December.  It was the only time in my life I ever got to do that with my mom.

Mom went home to be with the Lord on January 15, 1993.
