Character Education Hits Prime Time at CHS!

How do we help our students do their best work and be their best selves? These are the two main goals of the staff at Crestwood High School. Students need CHARACTER for both! Character Education is a critical part of the public education of our youth. Consequently, this year, as a school initiative, we will be concentrating on the two character traits of RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY.

In order to demonstrate self-respect, respect for others, and respect for the community, students should:

  • Realize their worth and dignity as human beings, and account for their strengths as well as their weaknesses
  • Display good manners and politeness, showing the same respect for others as they would wish for themselves
  • Work to improve the community
  • Be conservative in their use of natural resources
  • Understand and accept their role as a productive family member
  • Obey laws and rules
  • Show respect for legitimate authority
  • Exercise civic right and duties
  • Participate in worthwhile school and community activities such as Earth Day, Community Day Clean-Up, etc.

In order to demonstrate responsibility, students should:

  • Attend to task
  • Demonstrate persistence
  • Show best effort
  • Be able to carry out a duty and be trustworthy
  • Exercise sound thinking and good judgment knowing that they are personally accountable for their actions

Respect and responsibility are being integrated into our school curriculum. Strategies are being implemented by teachers in the classroom.

Student organizations are participating in the Character Education program through the following areas of focus:

  • Building Enhancement – focus on the visual aspect of promoting character through posters, signs, murals, display cases, etc.
  • Activities – focus on creating specific events/opportunities for students to show character
  • Motivation & Inspiration – focus on creating quality morning announcements to keep students thinking about respect and responsibility
  • Community Outreach – focus on getting input from parent and community members and involving community groups and businesses in the promotion of character

In an effort to recognize students who demonstrate respect and responsibility we will honor a student of character for each month of the school year. Both the nominee and the student who made the nomination will receive an award.

We encourage you to share your ideas, teaching strategies, and resources with us. We consider this a work in progress and invite you to work with us in promoting RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY at Crestwood High School.

CHS Teachers Receive Grant

Another school year has begun at Crestwood High School. This year will be very different for some students in science and math. During the final months of the school year and most of the summer, several teachers have been working diligently to make more authentic leaning environments in their classes. After hours of work, these teachers were awarded close to sixty thousand dollars in equipment and money to support their project entitled “A River Runs Through Us”. Two companies, Hewlett-Packard and Dominion Gas, supplied the group with laptop computers, multi-use printers, cameras, projectors and countless environmental sampling tools. These tools are already being put to use taking students out of the classroom allowing them to learn science, math, and technology standards while experiencing their own community in a new way.

Students in Mr. Andy Brown’s Environmental Science have begun the year by studying the use of Perspective in science. They are using satellite imagery to determine percent coverage of various substrates at Buchert Memorial Park. They are utilizing the same tools that surveyors would use to complete similar tasks. Later they will use their findings along with much closer perspective to analyze the health of this area. Environmental Chemistry has also made the trip to the park in order to begin analysis of the relationship between temperature, dissolved oxygen, and bacterial growth. Each week, for twelve consecutive weeks, they will be literally in the river, gathering information and water samples to complete the study. These types of projects will continue for both classes throughout the school year. In addition, the data that is generated in these projects will be used in Mr. Dave McMahon’s technology courses. These students will do statistical and trend analysis on the data collected by the science students, and the results of their findings will be posted by students in the Web Design classes to the high school website. In a similar vein, Mrs. Teresa Moon will use the data in her math classes as well and take her students out to do mathematical studies of their own. Back in the science wing, Mr. Dan Brubaker has physics students recreating graphs, but not with the normal paper and pencil. Students are working with specialty sensors to actually produce the graphs with their own movements providing the data for the drawings. Finally, Mr. Ryan McEylea will be teaching the freshman physical science about pH and the environment using a water sample process.

Once again, Crestwood High School has shown that it is on the cutting edge in education, using technology and natural environments to improve not only the quality of life of its students, but also solidifying its place as an educational leader!
