Verdant Rabbitry

Angoras & More

Welcome to Verdant Rabbitry!

Verdant Rabbitry is nestled in the foothills of south Virginia. I raised rabbits for about two years before I became seriously interested in English Angoras. The Angora rabbit is one of the oldest breeds in existence. During the reign of King Henry VIII (1491-1547), Angora rabbits or "English Silk Hares" were so treasured in England that people caught selling them outside the country were severely punished. Historians believe the last French queen, Marie Antoinette kept pet Angoras in the Palace of Versailles. Angoras have been in the US since at least 1840; a rabbit keeping book published in 1855 mentions the Angora among several varieties of domestic rabbit.*

While I am taking a temporary hiatus from raising English Angoras to give all my attention to school, please feel free to browse and learn more about this wonderful breed! Be sure to check out the Angora Care Articles section of our website for information about care and grooming.
