Courteney Bass Cox was born June 15, 1964 in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, her father, Richard, was a contracter. Her mother whom shared the name Courteney, was a homemaker. She has two sisters named Virginia and Dottie Pickett, one brother, Richard, and nine half-siblings. Courteney stayed with her mother when her parents divorced when she was ten. Her father moved to Florida where he remarried in 1975, her mother then married businessman Hunter Copeland in 1976.

Courteney began to study architecture / interior decoration at the Mount Vernon College after graduating from the Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham in 1982. In the summer holidays she went to New York where she was signed by the prestigious Ford modeling agency. After some shoots for magazines like Teen Beat and Young Miss, and for romance-novel covers she started working in television commercials for Maybelline, Noxzema and the New York Telephone Company. She then appeared in an episode of "As the World Turns" in 1983. However, she was noticed by filmmakers in 1984 when Bruce Springsteen picked her out of the crowd in his video for "Dancing in the Dark."

After the video, Courteney hosted a music show called "This Week's Music". She also worked at "Frontier Booking International" which is a concert booking agency in New York. In 1987 she was cast as the bright, perky girlfriend of Michael J. Fox on "Family Ties", this was her first well known part as an actress. Courteney had her first success as a movie actress when she was cast across Jim Carrey as the female lead, Melissa Robinson, in "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective."

In 1994 she had her final break-through when she landed the part of "Monica Geller" in the hit tv-series "Friends". The show's producers originally envisioned her in the role of Rachel but Courteney convinced them to give her the other role. In that same year People Magazine selected Courteney Cox for its annual list of the world's 50 most beautiful people. Not only that, but Courteney's picture was put on the cover, increasing the honor.

In 1995 Courteney co-hosted the "MTV Movie Awards". Her biggest success on the big screen so far was in 1996 with the movie "Scream" which made more than $100 million in the US, she continued the success with "Scream 2" which was released on December 12, 1997 and made almost $40 million at its opening weekend.
