Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are as popular today as they were in the 1920's, 30's and 40's. Their popularity is spread across all generations. If you enjoy the many films of "the boys", then get yourself down to a meeting of the 'Sons of the Desert'.
Who are the 'Sons of the Desert'?
The 'Sons of the Desert' is an organization that celebrates and aims to promote the comic geniuses of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, and the continual regular showing of their films.
Founded by the great Stan Laurel himself, the society has local group meetings all over the UK and the rest of the world! Each group, or Tent as it is known, is named after one of the films in which "the boys" appeared and is run independently, each having it's own unique charm. Bradford's tent is the 'County Hospital' tent.
What happens each 'County Hospital' tent meeting?
The main features of the meetings are the films themselves, which are proudly displayed with our own projection equipment. We also run two separate raffles. The first is for a host of prizes. The second is for cash, available only to those wearing the exclusive 'Sons of the Desert' fezzes, which are usually available at meetings (subject to availability). You could even win your membership money back if your member number is drawn out of the hat, which is a black bowler of course!
There is also a regular newsletter to keep you up to date with activities and organized events. All we ask for is a contribution into the bowler hat towards funding of film purchases and equipment maintenance.
How do I join the club?
Membership of our fraternity is compulsory but we do welcome one and all to our meetings. Then, should you wish to join, membership is only five pounds for a full year and if you're 15 or under you join for absolutely free!
When are Tent meetings held?
Meetings are held on the first Friday of every month. Festivities commence at 8pm and go on until 11pm. We hold our meetings in a private function room at the East Bowling I.L.P Club on Leicester Street in Bradford with a fully licensed bar and excellent car parking facilities, for details of how to get there i.e. directions and contact details, please see the 'Contact' section.
