| About Analysis Calendars |
The "contrail analysis" content of the charts is based on the work of
Mark L. Schrader (Air Weather Service, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois)
in his paper Calculations of Aircraft Contrail Formation Critical Temperatures.
The engine type in all the analysis charts is "high bypass". This is the type of
engine on the Air New Zealand and QANTAS aircraft that operate on the Auckland-Christchurch route
over central New Zealand - B737 ( CFM56 ) and A320
( MTU V2500 ).
Layers (range of altitudes) where
contrails would be expected to form and where these would be expected
to be persistent are indicated by gray shading. This indication may not
conform with observations. Some considerations need to be taken into account before definitive conclusions are drawn.
These are explained on another page.
Daily midday upper air sounding analysis charts are organised like a calendar for the month. The analysis charts are explained on another page.
To see the analysis chart for a particular day, click on the thumbnail chart for that day. The chart will appear more or less in the middle of the page. To see the chart a different day, click on the thumbnail for that day. Click on the full size chart to hide it again (and reveal the dates beneath it).
