Contact Visits’ Founder and Executive Director Lamont Carey created Contact Visits on June 7, 2001. Mr. Carey developed the idea to form this company while serving his own multi- year prison term in the United States Penitentiary-Allenwood-in White Deer, Pennsylvania. When preparing for release, Mr. Carey took classes in business management and nonprofit management, marketing, accounting, finance and other business related topics. Additionally, he was offered stress management, anger management, decision- making, substance abuse prevention, life skills, and other courses related to preparing to reenter society that were not effective. In December 2003, Mr. Carey applied for nonprofit status for Contact Visits from the IRS.
Mr. Carey’s first responsibility with Contact Visits was to develop more effective programs that address the needs and issues surrounding soon-to-be released felons, ex-con, and troubled youth. He is additionally responsible for the daily management of all Contact Visits operations, finding the locations for all three facilities, hiring and managing staff, grant writing and fundraising, bookkeeping, contract management, public relations, and interaction with federal and local government agencies, as well as other non-profit service providers, budgeting, sourcing of training and educational personnel, creation of curriculum programs, and marketing for Contact Visits.
