Danielle Elwood Birth and Postpartum Doula

About Me

My name is Danielle and I am a Birth and Postpartum and birth Doula. I work on the Shoreline of Connecticut, and also in the Naugatuck Valley area.
I have been working as a doula since 2005, doing mostly postpartum work but I am looking to complete my certification in birth. Ideally I would like to go back to school to become a Midwife over the next couple years and be a midwife within 5-10 years. Birth is my passion in life, along with my family.
I am a mother of one beautiful baby boy, and the wife to an amazing, supportive man.

Since I started working as a doula I have been so blessed by my experiences and clients. Every mother, baby, and family has touched my life in a way that no one else ever has. I could not think of a better line of work!

I do a lot of birth advocacy work, and I am currently working with local midwives to further education of mothers across the state.
I also am involved with The International Cesarean Awareness Network. They are an amazing organization that reaches out and helps many women yearly.

With all this birth advocacy work, my main goal is not only to educate but help heal birth by promoting natural birth and helping to lower C-Section rates by helping to prevent unnecessary C-sections.

What is a doula?

For a long time I tried to use an almost genetic dictionary type definition for what a doula is. But years of working as a doula helped me to realize that the only definition can come from the heart and experience. The word doula it self comes from the ancient Greek word for womans servant. Which essentially is what a doula is, both during birth and during the postpartum period. A doula is a laboring mothers support system, advocate, emotional support, and comforter.  Helping the woman to achieve the birth experience that is right for them.
