Penalty heartbreak for Hucknall

Grays Athletic 1-1 Hucknall Town - FA Trophy Final

Grays Athletic win 6-5 on penalties

Hucknall Town suffered the heartbreak of losing a cup final on penalties after they were beaten 6-5 on penalties by Conference South champions Grays Athletic. The game went to extra time after the two sides were level at 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes. No further goals were scored so penalties were needed like in yesterdays FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Arsenal.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes Grays backed by a good support that had travelled up to Villa Park from Essex, took the lead when John Martin cracked a 20-yard effort beyond Hucknall goalkeeper Greg Smith who just prior to the goal kept his team in the game with excellent stops from Dennis Oli and Stuart Thurgood.

Hucknall went out for the equaliser and it duly arrived when Gary Ricketts drilled in a cross with the ball ending up in the net with Danny Bacon claiming the goal despite the ball appearing to cross the line after striking Athletic's Dean Brennan.

In the shoot-out it was Grays keeper Ashley Bayes who proved the hero with two penalty saves - one in sudden death - to gift Grays the Trophy.

Alty promoted after play-off win

Altrincham 2-1 Eastbourne Borough (Conference North/South Play-Off Final)

Altrincham players celebrate at the Britannia Stadium

Altrincham will be playing Conference National football for the first time since 2000 after they beat Conference South play-off finalists Eastbourne Borough at Stoke City's Britannia Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Robins had reached the final after beating Nuneaton Borough on penalties and beating Kettering Town thanks to an extra time own goal whereas Eastbourne progressed after seeing off Thurrock and Cambridge City in the Conference South play-offs.

To the proceedings and Borough rattled a post within the opening ninety seconds however, Altrincham responded and had a goal ruled out for offside midway through the first half. The first goal went the way of the northern side as Rod Thornley found the net and Val Owen's goal shortly after put them well in the driving side. Scott Ramsay pulled one back for Borough from the penalty spot in the final minute after Yemi Odubade was fouled however, the glory belonged to Altrincham who will be now looking to stay in the top flight of non-league football.
