Season Five

5.01 Unusual Suspects

In an important chunk of X-Files pre-history, up-and-coming FBI agent Mulder crosses paths with an unlikely trio of eccentrics; pursues a beautiful alleged terrorist; and gets a searing glimpse into his own future.


The Lone Gunmen end up in jail when we are taken back to when and how their trio formed.

After faking his own suicide to shake off Syndication and FBI surveillance, Mulder secretly searches for the cause of -- and cure of -- Scully's terminal cancer.


Mulder visits Scully in the hospital for her cancer.

While Scully, dying from cancer, undergoes the desperate treatment her partner has stolen for her, Mulder penetrates the inner circle of the Syndicate-FBI conspiracy.  He finds many of the truths that have long eluded him -- as well as desillusionment, despair, and danger.

A vicious creature -- possibly of extraterrestrial origin -- is cutting a murderous swath through the American Southwest.  With Syndicate infiltrators in control of the X-Files, Mulder and Scully must find it -- and determine its place in the alien conspiracy.

A carjacking and subsequent highway chase have an inexplicably deadly ending: an innocent victim's head explodes.  Disobeying FBI orders, Mulder investigates -- and becomes a high-speed chase hostage himself.
