More than a traditional discipline

General Studies (GNST is not a traditional discipline. It is rather a field of knowledge dedicated to the relations between disciplines, ideas and problems within contemporary life and their roots in Western thought.  In order to acquire interdisciplinary coherence, GNST instructors and learners use primary material from literature, philosophy and religion, political, economic and social thought and the arts. Emphasis is placed upon critical evaluations of Western thinking and values. Relationships to non-Western traditions are discussed. As a result, the horizon of inquiry specific for GNST studies supports broader definitions of commonality, which motivates both learning and affirmative action within eclectic cultural environments.

The Ring of Knowledge is designed to empower creative instruction and outreach initiative.
