Old School 'Backyard" Martial Arts Training

Pencak Silat

Silat is the generic term used to describe the martial arts of Malaysia, South Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, and the Southern Philippines. In Indonesia it is referred to as Pencak Silat, and in the other countries as Seni Silat.

Silat is a comprehensive combat art covering all ranges from weapons to ground fighting. Because the art is all encompassing, it has been described as a "Jack of all Trades". It has the power of Karate and Thai boxing with the sensitivity of kung fu; the locks and throws of jiu jitsu with the weapons arsenal of escrima, plus specialist areas not found in many other martial arts. Coupled with the fact that life or death challenges are not unheard of in South East Asia, the survival and success of Silat  in the face of open challenges makes the system frighteningly effective.

Combative Mixed Martial Arts

Combative Mixed Martial Arts is constantly evolving as it incorporates only the best "functional" attributes from each of the martial arts. However, in keeping with Jeet Kune Do's philosophy, it also requires its practitioners to constantly evaluate these attributes. The result of this scrutiny is a martial art that is streamlined with efficiency, practicality, and is adaptable to any situation. Combative Mixed Martial Arts is an eclectic art, which is heavily influenced by Kung Fu, the Filipino martial arts, Tai Chi, Fencing,Bando, Thai Boxing,Pencak Silat, Jujitsu, Aikido, Judo, Savate,Western Wrestling,Boxing and other Western Concepts.

Filipino Martial Arts

Filipino Martial Arts(also known as Eskrima, Arnis and Kali) is a weapons based martial art which comes from the Philippines. Only recently has this art become more conspicuous in many countries and enjoyed the popularity of other more traditional Asian arts. Its difference from other martial arts is that the student is taught to train with weapons from the very start, rather than starting on empty hands training (like many martial arts do). This type of training builds manual dexterity in the practitioner and also trains faster conditioned responses to various attacks. Although it is weapons based, it also includes striking (kicking and punching), wrestling and grappling, and even groundfighting, as well as teaching practical defenses against most weapons.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai, translated into English as Thai Boxing, is the national sport of Thailand and is a martial art with origins in the ancient battlefield tactics of the Siamese (or Thai) army.  It evolved from sword and the hand-to-hand tactics of the Thai army.In the early 20th century, time limits, boxing gloves as well as a uniform set of rules were introduced.  During the latter half of the 20th century Muay Thai was exported to many countries and is now practiced by hundreds of thousands of people all over the world.

Muay Thai fights feature punches, kicks, elbows, knees, standing grappling and head-butts to wear down and knock out their opponent.  Thai training methods develop devastating power, speed and superb cardio-vascular endurance as well as fighting spirit.  Muay Thai  training is also quite safe thanks to sophisticated pad training that evolved to keep fighters healthy between fights.  Muay Thai has also proven very effective outside the ring and has been embraced enthusiastically by practitioners of a variety of self-defense, sporting, military and law enforcement activities.
