The Execution of Christopher Newton
At Christopher Newton's execution by lethal injection last month, it took 90 minutes and at least 10 stabs of the needle for the execution team to find a vein. The procedure was so drawn out the staff paused to allow Newton a bathroom break.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio responded with a wide-ranging request for state records, seeking, among other things, the names of the volunteer medics and guards who oversaw it. The request has drawn Ohio into a wider debate over whether executioners' identities should be kept secret.
Death penalty opponents say Newton's May 24 lethal injection was the latest in a series of botched executions nationwide, and that executioners' identities and professional credentials should be open to public scrutiny.
They point to the case of Dr. Alan Doerhoff, a participant in Missouri executions who was revealed in news reports to have been sued for malpractice more than 20 times. The state is no longer using his services.
Richard Dieter, executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based Death Penalty Information Center, which opposes the death penalty, said the public can't properly scrutinize the effectiveness of capital punishment without adequate information on those carrying it out.

Governor Says He Will Raise Black Male
Graduation Rates
Low high school graduation rates among African-American males in Ohio have been a problem for years, according to Gov. Ted Strickland. And he says now is the time to solve the problem.
Strickland spoke to nearly 2,000 people last Wednesday at the Governor's Conference on Increasing the High School Graduation Rate for African-American Male Students.
The governor recently created a $90,002-a-year job to address the achievement gap in Ohio, appointing former State Sen. C.J. Prentiss, and requesting $20 million in the state budget for the initiative. The two-year budget has passed the Ohio House and is awaiting Senate approval.
Strickland said he hopes to address it by working with individual communities to find out what will work for them and not take a "one size fits all" approach.
The graduation rate for African-American males statewide is 64 percent, compared to 88 percent for white males, a gap Strickland promised to help close. Strickland also pointed to the unemployment rate of African-American males, which is twice that of white males in Ohio.
Dr. Claud Anderson Explains His Opposition to
Illegal Immigration
Every time someone points out why something is detrimental to Black people, "a chorus of neutralizers" will begin pointing out other groups of people who for whatever reasons have had some minor aspects of the same problem or treatment. Whites are experts at this "now you see, now you don't game." When Black slavery is mentioned, a chorus will point out that slavery existed in Egypt and Rome. When Black suppression is mentioned, the chorus will talk about White women. When preferential treatment is requested for Black people, the chorus will substitute preferential treatment and parking for the handicapped. When legislation is enacted to end Jim Crow segregation and discrimination against Blacks, the chorus will chant "end discrimination against gays, women, midgets and everybody.
The same chorus is heard when you request that this nation establish a concentric circle for allocating benefits, rights, space, jobs, and educational opportunities and native Black Americans ought to be in the center of that concentric circle before benefits radiate out to an unending influx of immigrants who are entering this country in search of first class benefits. Any one who does not know Black history will not understand how immigration has negatively impacted on native Black Americans.
Blacks are competing against every other race or groups, whether they are Whites, Jews, Hispanics, Incas, Mayans, or Aztecs. Every body cannot win in a race. The whole point of a race is to separate winners from losers. Our people, especially the chorus that wants to save every body, will never win so long as they have their lips fixed on the butts of other groups. We are the only people who want to save every body.

Charles Campbell Responds to Dr. Anderson
Dr. Claud Anderson is one of many Great Black Thinker and Doers. His warnings are prophetic. His Plan PowerNomics provides a guide for Black Employment, yet our leadership continues to play silly games and ignore the lesson. Immigrants have been coming and will continue to come here to compete against Black People for jobs, businesses and political opportunities. Dr. Anderson is loved and respected by many Conscious Black Thinkers. If we are to help Black People, those of us who are conscious better stop playing games as well and move toward collective economic, educational, political, legal, medical, research, social and security of our people.
If we lead with an action plan, they will follow. Bring Back Black which I, Dr. Anderson, Jim Clingman and so many others are a part of, is such a group. The Quiet Resolution (TQR) is a Black Empowerment Plan that I have ask many people to read and consider. It outlines a framework and strategies for Black Empowerment based on the Principles of PowerNomics. Black Group Empowerment is based upon Black Love! We must learn to love that which we can never change: Being Black Afrikan. I invite everyone to download a FREE Copy of TQR at http://wbsinccd.tripod.com/madsuicidalbomber and email me with your feedback at: Email: wbsbpd88@hotmail.com

Dangerous Strain of Tuberculosis Not Found in Ohio
According to Ohio health officials, the state had about 240 reported cases of tuberculosis last year but the dangerous strain which sparked a global health alert has never been seen in the state after the American patient flew to Europe for his wedding and honeymoon last month.
A 31-year-old lawyer from Atlanta is now in isolation at a hospital in Denver with the more dangerous strain of TB.
People with lesser strains of the disease have been quarantined by local health agencies in Ohio, though the state health department says it does not keep track of the numbers.

Open Letters:
Columbus Gentrification and Blacks:
What is taking place in Columbus vis-a-vis gentrification is happening all over, and it is simply because of two things: Black people think that just because we get a "black-skinned" person in high political office, things will tip in our favor. Wrong! And, Black people will not work cooperatively and collectively to capture the assets in our neighborhoods, thus, anyone can come in anytime and do whatever they want to do.
Nobody is going to help Black folks but Black folks, conscious Black folks, and that help will only com from a collective standpoint. We are too individualistic in our thinking and in our actions, which is a prescription for failure every time, especially for Black people in the U.S. I pray we change our ways very soon by standing together, rich and poor, urban and suburban, and fight against what has been status quo for centuries now.

Still Silence on the Air
I know things will soon change for the 1580 signal and I know that black urban talk will make a return but still one year later here we sit on the eve of a primary election without the means by which to evaluate these candidates running for city council, school board,...
I'll admit that I'm out the loop. I've heard some names but other than that, and a very busy schedule I just haven't had the time to figure out who's worthy of my or our community vote for these offices.
I remember getting calls from people about "Did you know they pulled the plug on WVKO" on May 5th of last year. Hard to believe that we've went a whole year without any means of communication but here we are.
I saw one of our black papers say that we've got pure Black Power in Columbus with a majority on city council the school board and everywhere else. WVKO would've challenged that. It's been tough for all of us because when they were here we didn't have to work as hard to get our information but now if we don't have the time to just torrn on the radio and listen to what's happening, we may not know what's going on other than some of our great community communicators that email stuff to all of us to keep us up on the latest... that's it.

Consumer Group Wants Restrictions on
“Payday Lenders”
(Taylor Media Services) A state senator Monday joined a consumer group in calling for a cap on interest rates charged by so called payday lenders and for a limit on the number of loans a person can take out. Critics charge that payday lenders are taking advantage of low income working people by hitting them with excessively high interest rates.
Democratic State Sen. Ray Miller said Monday night at a meeting of BREAD, an advocacy group comprised of 50 Columbus religious congregations, “We are trying to keep people from a position of financial ruin from going from one check casher to the next to try to pay for the first loan and eventually end up in a financial position they can’t get out of.”
The payday lending industry, which has spread across the country in recent years, counter that consumers should be free to make their own decisions regarding loans without government interference.
State Budget Passes House with Historic
Bipartisan Support
(Taylor Media Services) Governor Ted Strickland’s two-year, $52.1 budget has passed the House with a historic level of support by both Democrats and Republicans. In fact, the final vote was 97 to 0 with one representative absent and another not yet appointed to fill a vacant seat.
State historians said this was the first time since 1955 that a biennium budget had received the support of all those voting. The measure was taken up by the Senate this past Tuesday and work continued throughout most of the weekend. There is some opposition in the Senate but bipartisan support remains high there as well.
Among the provisions in the budget bill are the creation of a Medicaid Buy-In program which will allow the disabled to continue their coverage after finding work, a tuition freeze imposed on state colleges and universities, a broadening of eligibility for children’s health care and the Senate , over the objection of business leaders, has so far added a provision to give a tax break to senior citizens who have been laid off from work.
Black Enterprise Magazine Rates Columbus 9th Best City for
Blacks
(Taylor Media Services) According to the May issue of Black Enterprise magazine, Columbus is the 9th best city in America for African Americans to “live,
work and play.”
The ranking of cities was based on a survey of 2,000 readers of the New York-based business publication which has a readership of 3.9 million. The opinions of those readers were then weighed with a host of other factors including employment opportunities, income and Black business ownership. Mayor Michael B. Coleman said the Black Enterprise ranking showed the city “was working to improve quality of life for its residents.”
The survey rated Washington, D.C. the number one city for Blacks followed by Atlanta, Georgia and Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. The remaining members of the top 10 were Houston, Texas; Nashville, Tennessee; Dallas, Texas; Charlotte, North Carolina; Indianapolis, Indiana; Columbus, Ohio and Jacksonville, Florida.
Government Prosecution of Christopher Paul Will Be
Based on Secretly Issued Search Warrants
(Taylor Media Services) Christopher Paul, the 43-year-old Columbus man facing federal terrorism charges, will be prosecuted based on evidence collected from secretly issued search warrants. The upcoming use of the secret warrants was revealed on Sunday.
Christopher Paul
Paul was arrested on April 11th and is accused of joining
the militant Islamic
group and providing material support to terrorist and conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction. He faces up to life in prison.
The evidence against him was obtained under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act which enabled the secret monitoring of his telephone calls and emails. However, the government has a checkered success record with these types of cases. Several of its high profile terrorism cases have ended in acquittals or convictions on lesser charges.
Two Former Convicts Are Establishing a Foundation
in Honor of Timothy Howard
(Taylor Media Services) Former convicts Khalil Osiris and David Chodorow have begun efforts to establish a foundation in honor of Timothy Howard – the Columbus man who spent 26 years in prison for a bank robbery shooting death which he did not commit.
Howard suffered a heart attack in March and died a few days later at the age of 53. He had collected $2.5 million from the state to settle his wrongly imprisonment lawsuit.
Osiris and Chodorow say their Timothy Howard Foundation will organize support groups and mentoring programs to help those recently released from prison adjust to the challenges of life outside of prison. Despite the financial settlement, Howard had a difficult time adjusting and that inability may have led to his heart attack.

Reader Raises Question About Columbus Population Figures
This past Thursday, the Columbus dispatch ran an article stating that Black Enterprise Magazine has Columbus, Ohio ranked as the 9th best city for Blacks. My issue with that is not the ranking but the estimated population of the city. In my previous comment to the Columbus page I questioned the population count and now it seems we have picked up 62,000 people! I just wonder where they get their figures. We know no one really knows how many we are but a 62,000 people disparity? Now again as in my previous letter this count does NOT take into account the approximately 100.000 Blacks immigrants who have moved to Columbus.
