Ruscus aculeatus L. Butcher’s Broom. Capel St Andrew TM377484. Two small bushes c. one metre apart on east facing grass verge. 20/03/2004 C.A.J. C.G.A.

 Viola odorata L. Sweet Violet.  Alton Water TM1436 a small patch of the white flowering form in grass. 20/03/2004. C.A.J. C.G.A.

 Callendula officinalis L. Pot Marigold. Pakefield TM541909 One in flower down cliff face. 28/03/2004.

 Cerastium arvense L. Common Field Mouse Ear. Herringfleet Hills TM469981. Several by entrance gate.

Also present Erodium cicutarium L. Common Storks – bill. One White flowered form.

Viola canina ssp canina L. Heath Dog Violet. Several on short turf. 25/04/2004

Crataegus x media Bechst. Hybrid Hawthorn. Lowestoft TM545941. A c50m hedgerow bordering the south side of Harris Middle School. Also Oulton by Ambulance Station in west facing hedgerow TM521952. 02/05/2004.

 Allium ursinum L. Ramsons. Oulton TM59. A considerable patch in private wood with many ancient woodland indicators. 02/05/2004.

 Amsinkia macrantha Lehm. Fiddleneck  Park Hill Oulton. TM 525961

One plant in hedgerow. Rare in the Lothingland District.

Also here Cruciata laevipes  Mill. Crosswort. Several plants along south facing hedgerow. 02/05/2004

Geranium rotundifolium L. Round Leaved Crane’s-Bill.  White House Farm Oulton TM518965. Several white flowering plants by stables. 02/05/2004.

By lake in holiday camp. Common in this area of Lothingland.

 Melampyrum pratense L. Common Cow Wheat Flixton Decoy Lowestoft TM 512959 v.c.25 C.A.J. C.G A. Two plants by an Oak Quercus rober   29/05/03.

 Amsinkia micrantha Sucksd. Coast Fiddleneck. Dunwich Broom Hill TM 468703. v.c.25 C.A.J abundant in set –aside field. 30/05/2003.

 Also Benacre NNR. TM535833 v.c 25 C.A.J 04/06/03 a few plants along edge of potato field.

 Allium vineale L., Wild Onion/ Crow Garlic. North Denes Lowestoft TM 552943 v.c.25 C.A.J  06/ 06/03 Two plants in vegetation at bottom of the sea wall conf. C.P.Barsted.

 Agrimonia euphatoria L., Agrimony. Gunton Rail Track. TM545958 v.c.25 C.A.J. N.M. 13/07/03.  A Common plant probably overlooked in survey.

  Duchesnea indica. (Jacks) Focke Yellow-flowered Strawberry. Flycatcher Lane Lowestoft TM550949. 17/07/2003  v..c 25 C.A.J. a few plants in fruit along west side of path.

The only Suffolk Record by Dr N.B. Eastwood 1962. Recorded by A. Copping in 2002 for the East Lowestoft Flora.

 conitum napellus  L. Monkshood Flixton Decoy Lowestoft TM 512959 v.c25 C.G.A. conf. C.A.J.17/07/2003 in damp woodland bordering the decoy. Believed to be wild.

 Impatiens glandulifera. Royle. Himalayan Balsam Pakefield Park TM 531911 v.c 25 C.A.J. 15/07/03. a few plants by horse paddock. An increasing alien in damp urban areas. Also recorded nearby   Callendula officinalis Pot Marigold. L. An annual garden throwout.

 Glyceria maxima (Hartm.) Holmb. Reed- Sweet Grass. Pakefield. TM 525906 v.c.25 C.A.J. 15/07/03. One plant along stream bank. Uncommon away from the Suffolk Broads.

 Malva neglecta Dwarf Mallow Wallr. Lowestoft Yarmouth Road. TM 543948 v.c.25 C.A.J. 20/07/03 one plant on roadside verge

 Alcea rosea Hollyhock. L., Pakefield TM531889 v.c.25 C.A.J. 20/07/2003 One plant in flower along west facing roadside verge by the A12.

 Apium graveolens Wild Celery. L., New Cut Haddiscoe  TM451992 v.c.27 C.A.J. C.G.A 22/07/2003. Abundant along northern river bank. One or two plants still in flower on 5th December.

 Solanum tuberosum Potato.L., New Cut Haddiscoe  TM431011 v.c.27 C.A.J. 22/07/2003.

Three or four plants along northern bank, probably from discarded food from boating people.

 Hieraceum ubellatum L., Narrow-leaved Hawkweed. Gunton Warren Lowestoft TM548956 v.c.25 C.A.J. 23/07/03 A few plants by footpath & by Dunes Simpson 1982 mentions it as recorded on nearby Lowestoft Denes in 1980.

 Impatiens glandulifera. Royle. Himalayan Balsam. Bonds Meadow Lowestoft TM522938. v.c. 25 C.A.J 24/07/03. Abundant along shady damp parts of the wood.

Excursions 2004.


Castle Marshes Near Beccles Suffolk.

An evening walk on 19th April produced a few spring migrants namely Swallow, Sedge Warbler & Cuckoo. Two Chinese Water Deer were also seen. In the plany line we saw Tubular Water Dropwort & Floating sweet grass.
