The short game, that is those shots from 100 yards to 1 inch from the flag, are over looked by a large number of players, and if reducing the number of shots taken per round is what’s needed then the pitching, chipping, putting and bunker play must improve. This is often a far easier and quicker way of improving your scores and a small amount of work can achieve a huge difference in performance. A few chip or pitch shots either where ground is struck before the ball or the ball is contacted half way up and the ball travels very low with top spin can be every bit as damaging as a misplaced tee shot.
By structuring several short game lessons, firstly concentrating on solid club on ball contact is the first step to improving, then working on club/shot selection and finally distance control many shots can be saved and the enjoyment level will increase too!
