Eddie Cochran was an early inspiration to Brian Setzer. Setzer is one of the best rockabilly guitarists. Setzer's yearly Christmas tours are usually sold-out events.
Setzer was born in New York City and raised in Long Island, but now lives in Minnesota and apparently has a recording studio is Cannon Falls.
At age eight Setzer played a tuba-like instrument, a euphonium, for about ten years. Big bands with horns were in his thoughts as a teen. But rock & punk took hold. As a guitarist and songwriter, he took his inspiration from blues-rock bands. Still as a teen, Setzer would head to New York to check out the jazz clubs, suck as Village Vanguard. He soon had aspirations of leading his own big band not with a horn, but with a guitar.
In the early '80s, Brian formed Stray Cats, a rockabilly band that was extremely popular in England. The U.S. breakthrough album, Built for Speed, spawned several Top Ten hits, including "Stray Cat Strut," "Rumble in Brighton," and "Rock This Town." On tour with the Cats, Setzer practiced jazz chords and listened to the recordings of Goodman, Krupa and other big-band leaders. After the group broke up, Setzer formed a big band in Los Angeles. Setzer's big band Christmas tours have been successful for several years.
If you are unfamiliar with Setzer's guitar work, I think you will be impressed by his skill and stylizations...rock, big band, country rock, rockabilly.
