What is the Unit?
The City of North Shore Cadet Unit is a youth organisation, part of the New Zealand Cadet Forces. What makes it different from any other youth organisation? It provides teenagers with activities that are highly enjoyable, for one thing. But more importantly, it teaches them important life skills such as pride, discipline, teamwork and, most especially, leadership.
When a teenager first enters the Cadet Forces, they find themselves in an environment where the chain of command is highly regarded. For example, the teen will first be what is known as a probationary cadet, a term lasting four weeks. In this time the unit will scout the cadet and encourage them to join the unit. When this term is up, the cadet may join as a first year cadet.
As a first year, this person can experience alot of what cadet forces has to offer, but there is still much more that the cadet cannot do yet. Why? Because the cadet forces is not a brief period of fun for a cadet, but a long relationship with the cadet, much like school. The cadet will be trained and developed within cadets, and will come out a much better person.

March 2006 Out comes the SLR Drill rifles once again as training begins for the Cenotaphe Party for ANZAC Day. The Unit has been asked to supply a Guard Party for the Dawn Parade at Brown's Bay, and for the Civic Parade at Birkenhead. This is the last year we will have the old SLR Drill rifles, being replaced by new styre look-a-likes. We had a visit from our sister unit KCCU on one evening as their Unit Officer is on maternity leave.
February 2006 What a great start to the year! We had 10 new recruits arrive, eager as ever to join the Unit. Great stuff guys. This year is all about recruiting so spread the word about the best youth organisation around! Thank-you to all the pers who helped out at the Symphony in the Park evening. This year they were fundraising for Variety, the childrens' charity. It was also a great opportunity to get some awareness about NZCF. This month also saw the farewell of WOII Burns - good luck to him as he ventures on into University, it has been a great 5 years with you as part of the Unit.
December 2005
This month sees relations with Kaipara Community Cadet Unit (KCCU) increase, combining both our final parade and skills efforts. At the final parade, Lance Corporal Millett receives promotion to Corporal and Cadet D. Hirst to Lance Corporal. At the Northern Area Skills Competition, the unit, under the KCCU name, competes strongly with only 10 members, and places 4th overall. Very notable achievements came out of the competition, such as 1st in Navigation Practical, 2nd in Drill and Shooting and Sgt Hirst 5th overall. A high point to round off the year.
November 2005
The Unit rounds off a solid year of training and exercises with five weeks in a row of shooting practice at the Hobsonville range. Unit final parade is scheduled for Sunday 4th December, 1700hrs at Unit HQ. Sgt Yan was accepted onto the Advanced Leaders Course to be held in December. Best of luck to Sgt Yan on the worthwhile course.

West Auckland Cadet Unit is put into recess status by NZCF, so some of their more committed cadets come to join CNSCU, thus boosting our numbers for the first parade of the year.
December 2004
At the recent Northern Area Skills Competition, the unit (combined with Kaipara Community Cadet Unit and West Auckland Cadet Unit to make up the numbers) achieved a credible fourth place with only 10 cadets.
