HOW OTHERS USED THE BLOOD

This section will review breedings made with Clouse blood by individuals other than Mr. Clouse, before and after he passed away.  I will take the Clouse line to it's present form.

JAKE WILDER

Jake Wilder was well liked by many dogmen in his surrounding area.  Some of these dogmen kept good dogs on Jake's yard.  Bert Clouse kept a few notable dogs in Jakes yard, including Ch. Clouse’s Big Boy and Ch. Clouse’s Butcher Boy.  From time to time, Jake crossed Clouse blood into his OFRN strain.  Jake made other crosses with Clouse blood as well.

Click this link http://www.freewebs.com/dogletters/jakewilder.htm for more interesting information about Mr. Wilder.

The following dogs were bred by Jake Wilder, which had Clouse influence to some degree:

Clouse’s Red Jack was bred to Wilder’s Margie, to produce Wilder’s Nugget.

http://apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=8198

Red Jack was not bred into the core line of Clouse dogs; however, Red Jack’s Dam (Firefly) was, for that reason, I thought it was worthwhile to include Red Jack here.

Ch. Clouse’s Butcher Boy was bred to Skaggs’ Ring, to produce:

Wilder’s Clouse Jane.

http://apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=4141

Wilder’s Clouse Jane was also known as Taylor’s Butcher Boy Jane.

http://apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=1348

Wilder’s Nugget was bred to Clouse’s Butcher Boy Jane, to produce:

Wilder’s Cindy:

http://apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=26912

and Wilder’s Spice

http://apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=545

When bred to Hemphill's Geronimo,Wilder’s Spice produced Wilder’s Mitzie,

http://apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3338

who was significant in the development of the Norrod Strain.

When bred to Taylor’s Butcher Boy Jane, Nugget produced Wilder’s Red Ace.

http://apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3498

Jake bred Ch. Clouse’s Butcher Boy to Wilder’s Cindy.

http://apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=157871

As seen elsewhere in this site, below is the advertisement for the above breeding.

Mr. Wilder bred Wilder’s Red Ace to Hemphill’s Red Dixie and produced Tartenaar's Cindy:

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3499

An interesting note, the Nugget x Jane breeding produced both Red Ace and Spice.

Both Red Ace and Spice were bred to Pure Hemphill dogs.

Red Ace was bred to Hemphill’s Red Dixie.

Spice was bred to Hemphill’s Geronimo.

(Geronimo and Red Dixie were littermates as well).

This makes offspring from those breedings (Wilder’s Mitzie and Tartenaar’s Cindy) Genetic equivalents.

This blood must have been potent, as they are both found in the pedigrees of several champion dogs.

Notice the contribution from Clouse Jane, in the pedigree of Giroux' Gr. Ch. Carlo ROM.

http://apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=126808

There are a few other foundation Clouse dogs in that ped as well.

Clouse’s Judge was bred to Schreiner’s Phanamutapa to produce Wilder’s Tupper.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=240909

Tupper was significant in the breeding of Gr. Ch. Lucky Strike.

I originally contacted Jake in the early 80's, as I was researching the Clouse line (yes, even way back then).  In 1985, Jake provided me with a hand written pedigree that listed some heavy Clouse dogs.  The following is that pedigree:

Everett Tartenaar:

Everette Tartenaar matched dogs at a local level.  He recieved dogs directly from Bert Clouse.  Mr. Clouse maintained contact with Everette over the years and directed some breedings, with dogs under Everett's care.

Tartenaar's Heck:  Very heavy Clouse's Staber.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3497

As mentioned earlier in this site, Tartenaar's Cindy was bred by Jake Wilder.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3499

Heck and Cindy were bred together to create Tartenaar's Sassy:

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=6017

Sassy had several good littermates, including Killen's Cid.

Cid was a popular stud in his day and went on to contribute to the Sarona and Martin line of dogs.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3501

Tartenaar's Red Rowdy was also a littermate to Sassy and Cid.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=148036

Red Rowdy also contributed to the Sarona line.

Wilder’s Cleo was another Heck x Cindy offspring.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=50685

She was bred directly to Jake Wilder's Geronimo II dog.

The last Heck x Cindy offspring I am aware of is Blanchard's Kwesi.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=47456

Kwesi contributed to the Ed Mullins family of dogs.

When Heck was bred to Sassy, several good dogs were produced.

Ch. Herme's Butcher Boy (3 x):

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=18258

Ch. Herme's Butcher Boy was a good dog in his own right (not to be confused with Clouse's Butcher Boy).

Butcher Boy won three and lost one to Crenshaw's Ch. Hurt.  J.C. must have seen something he liked when Butcher Boy lost to his Hurt dog, as Mr. C. infused that same Clouse blood into his own breeding program, via Butcher Boy's sister, Crossland's lady.

Ch. Crossland's Lady (3 x):

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=6094

This bitch produced winners from different sires.  Offspring from those dogs also went on to become winners and producers.

Sarona Motorhead (AKA Hammerdown Motorhead)  Heck x Sassy.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=4169

Also a producer of some game dogs.  Was also used by Sarona Kennels.

Sarona Buckwheat:

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=37645

Was used as a brood bitch by Jake Wilder as well as Sarona kennels.

Don Killen and Killen's Cid

On 01/2/08, I spoke with Mr. Don Killen, who was kind enough to give me a few minutes of his time.  Mr. Killen is 61 years old at the time of this writing and was the owner of the famous, Killen’s Cid.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=21686

Killen’s Cid was a very well bred dog.  He was a successful blend of Hemphill and Clouse blood.  As seen in other portions of this website, dogs down from this breeding produced winners for several yards.  Mr. Killen purchased Cid from Jake Wilder in 1972.

Cid was in high demand as a producer and stud.  Pups or stud service from Cid would cost you $500.00, which was a tidy sum in the mid seventies.  Apparently many thought it was worth the price as Cid offspring went out to 30 states within the U.S.

Cid was known for producing game dogs and when crossed with other lines, produced desirable hybrid vigor.  Mr. Killen seems to have more than just a cursory knowledge of genetics, as he cross-breeds different species of mules and donkeys for targeted work applications.

Mr. Killen told me that one of the best breedings done with Cid was to the Scrapper bitch.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=11890

Scrapper was obtained from a fellow named Miller but was bred by Earl Adams of Manchester TN.  75 % of Scrapper’s blood contains most of the Cid’s immediate ancestry.

Cid was bred to Miss Cochise.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3509

Miss Cochise was owned by Jean C.  When breeding Miss Cochise to Cid, Cochise had to be given a sedative by a vet, as she wanted to hit another dog, even during breeding.

The Cid x Cochise breeding produced Jean’s Joni.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=9098

Cid produced dogs that varied between 40 to 60 lbs.  Mr. Killen said that Cid was not a 2-time winner but did produce very good sporting dogs.  Unfortunately, Cid was stolen from Mr. Killen’s yard.

SARONA, Mary Sunderman

The Sarona line of dogs enjoyed some popularity in the confirmation ring during the seventies and early eighties.  There were a few worthy examples down from Sarona breedings, which carried a fair percentage of Clouse blood.  As these dogs were bred away from the Clouse influence, they tended to be very large and had a lower percentage of game dogs.  The following is not intended to be a complete history of the Sarona line; rather, it is a listing of those dogs which carried the highest Clouse influence.

It looks like much of the Sarona foundation stock, came from Clouse and Hemphill crosses, which were then bred to other performance lines.  As seen previously in this site, Sarona Motorhead was bred by Everette Tartenaar, sired by Tartenaar’s Heck and out of Tartenaar’s Sassy.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=4169

The Heck x Sassy breeding was special as it yeilded two champions from the same litter.  The litter obviously offered something worthwhile, as a total of four offspring were selected as contributors to the Sarona line.

Bunce’s Ruby was 40.625% Clouse.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=320

Ruby was bred to Gr. Ch. Art to produce Sarona Hang Tough.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=5697

Hang Tough was a sister to Ch. Thrift’s Bumper.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=322

Motorhead was bred to Hang Tough and produced, Sarona Hang Tough Bell.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=5613

as well as Sarona Hang Tough Gal.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=5698

Wilder’s Geronimo II was bred to Clouse’s Red Lady, to produce Sarona Hemphill Rocky.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=5694

Doc’s Susie Bell was a sister to Clouse’s Judge.  Susie Bell was bred to Offer’s Pistol to produce Sarona Judy.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=5695

Rocky was bred to Judy and produced Krengel’s Barabas.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=5696

Sarona Buckwheat was a sister to Motorhead (Heck x Sassy).

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=37645

Barabas was bred to Buckwheat and produced, Sarona Kayo.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=8407

Barabas was bred to Hang Tough Gal and produced Nolen’s Bull.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=5699

Barabas was also bred to Gal’s sister (Hang Tough Bell), to produce Sebion’s Buster.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=5701

Much like Motorhead and Buckwheat, another Tarternaar’s Heck x Tartenaar’s Sassy offspring was used in the development of the Sarona line.  Sester’s Zoro.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=21051

Zoro was bred to Tiger Lil’ and produced Sarona Calamity.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=5744

Motorhead was bred to Calamity to produce Kipling’s Sarona Korihor.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=5743

Sarona Hemphill Rocky had a sister named Sarona Rocket.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=240608

Rocket was bred to Tartenaar’s Red Rowdy (a sister to Killen’s Cid) and produced Sarona Real Spicy.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=148038

Spicy was the dam to Sarona Revelation.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=240607

Motorhead was bred to Revelation and produced Krengel’s Ripper.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=240608

Ripper was bred to Kayo and produced Lowery’s Scampi.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=240881

Another Heck x Sassy offspring was bred to Ch. Crenshaw’s Rascal and produced

Sunderman’s Sarona Hassle.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=31097

Hassle was a littermate to Crossland’s George (2 x).

Sarona Hassle n Hannah

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=31098

Hassle n Hannah was bred into some of the Sarona breedings posted above and produced

Trisic’s Ganija ROM

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=131192

A close look at the above dogs will reveal some champion pit stock.  You will also find littermates of Sarona dogs, who were accomplished pit dogs as well as some who went on to produce high end box dogs, when controlled by other breeders.  As previously written, the early Sarona breedings contained a heavy Clouse influence.  As they were bred away from the Clouse (and straight Hemphill) blood, serious dogmen no longer embraced them and the line became strictly for show.

Just thought I would include the following examples for the Sarona fans out there!

Killen’s Cid was bred to Campbell’s Cajun Lulu, to produce Sarona Trouble, 68 lbs.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3546

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=4167

Deadly Demon, 61 lbs

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=5552

J.C.

When you hear the names of great dogs like Jeep, Rascal and Honeybunch, the great dogman J.C. comes to mind.  J.C. is a living legend and has bred some of the finest examples of gamedogs in the history of the sport.  J.C. knew Bert Clouse.  From their association, Mr. C. used good dogs down from Clouse stock.

When bred to Rascal, Crossland's Lady produced the George dog.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=84338

George was a 2 x winner and confiscated by authorities before he could finish his third.

Clouse's Judge was bred to Crossland's Lady, to produce Kansas,

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=1368

Kansas had a littermate sister named Brandy, who was a 2 x winner.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=111142

When Bred to Rascal Jr, Kansas produced the 2 x winner, Winona.

Mr. Parish

Interview with Mr. Parrish                                                                              06/14/07

At the time of this writing, Mr. Parrish was 79 years old and was involved with dogs from the mid seventies, to the early nineties.

I inquired about the first dog that I found under Mr. Parrish’s ownership, which was Parrish’s Ginger.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=26409

Ginger was sired by Hemphill’s Geronimo and out of Brock’s Sandy.

Geronimo is of course pure Hemphill, while Sandy was down from the breeding of Ike Cole.

Sandy is bred similar to a dog named Wilder’s Nugget II.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3463

When I asked who Mr. Parrish purchased Ginger from, I was not surprised to learn that he bought her straight from Jake Wilder.

He said that Jake was known for “working with the red dogs”.  Ginger was a red, red nose bitch, with a chain weight of 40 lbs.

Years later, Mr. Parrish would see Jake again, as Mr. Wilder traveled close to his area, in order to deliver a dog to another fancier, as well as to fight chickens.

Mr. Parrish bred Ginger to Killen’s Cid.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3501

Mr. Parrish heard that a fellow named Killen, had a good red nose stud, North by the Tennessee River.  Ginger would fuss with other dogs, so both she and Cid had to be restrained during the breeding.

From this mating came Parrish’s Shelly.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=11894

Mr. Parrish related that he did not get involved with contract matches; however, he did test his dogs.  He sold his pups to active dog-men and he mentioned that many returned for more, especially after he started breeding to the Clouse line.

Clouse’s Vic was owned by a Veterinarian in Alabama.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3491

Vic was kept in the yard of a friend; however, Vic would occasionally sample the chickens on the property and had to be moved.

The Vet needed to sell Vic and Mr. Parrish heard this pure Clouse dog was available.  Vic was sold to Mr. Parrish at 1 ½ years old.

Vic was red, with a red nose.  Mr. Parrish said that Vic was a game dog and liked to work the mouth.

During hard testing, Vic bit several teeth out of one of his opponents.

Vic contracted heart worms and lived out his life with Mr. Parrish.

Clouse’s Vic was bred to Parrish’s Shelly, to produce Parrish’s Chrissy.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=11895

Clouse’s Red Bomber was available for stud, from Michael Martin.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3496

Clouse’s Red Bomber was bred to Parrish’s Chrissy, to produce Parrish’s Sara Jane.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=11896

Sara Jane was bred back to Clouse’s Vic, to produce Bailey’s Vic.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=11897

Mr. Parrish is no longer involved with game-dogs.  Today, Mr. Parrish breeds and sells Jack Russell Terriers, as well as Beagles.

I thanked Mr. Parrish for his contribution to game-dogs.

Jim Farrelly

Jim Farrlley

I cannot claim to have personal knowledge about the breedings down from Mr Farrlley but some up in the great white north swear by this Mayfeild/Clouse cross.

Looks like the Farrlley blood was kicked off by taking Len’s Moonshine (a Mayfield/Tudor dog)

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=2338

to Clouse’s Dotty (50 % Clouse).

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=2363

From this breeding came.

Ch. Farrlley’s Bounce (25 % Clouse)

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=252780

Farrlley’s Dizzy (25 % Clouse)

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=2351

Farrlley’s Dooly (25 % Clouse)

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=2366

Dizzy was bred to Clouse’s Jupelo (100 % Clouse)

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=2352

to produce Farrlley’s Zelda (62.20 % Clouse)

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=2343

Farrlley’s Dooly was bred to Clouse’s Linda (60.456 % Clouse)

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=2367

to produce Lobb’s Tina. (42.7734 % Clouse)

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=2353

Jupelo was bred to Tina to produce Farrelly’s Swaps. (71.3867 % Clouse)

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=2341

Jim’s Moonshine was bred to Tina to produce Johnston’s Razor Blade.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=56741

The dogs listed above were selectively bred to produce the Farrelly line.

Michael Martin

Looks like Michael Martin started out with pure Clouse blood (Clouse’s Red Bomber), that was crossed with the Jean's Joni (17% Clouse) bitch.

Clouse’s Red Bomber:

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3496

Jean’s Joni:

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=9098

Martin's Red Jerry was sired by Clouse's Red Bomber, out of Jean's Joni (Killen's Cid x Jean's Miss Cochise):

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=2962

Jerry had a brother named, Martin's Red Eagle.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=67163

Killen's Cid was bred to Jean's Miss Cochise to produce Martin's Red Rose (Red Rose was a sister to Jean's Joni).

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3510

Red Bomber was bred to Red Rose, to produce Martin’s Ellie.  This is the genetic equivalent to Martin’s Red Jerry.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3511

Killen's Cid was bred to Jean's Joni, to produce Martin's Red Pepper (Double Killen’s Cid).

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=110478

Red Pepper had a littermate by the name of Red Dagger.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=11888

Red Dagger was bred to Killen’s Cajun Scrapper to produce Martin’s Red Bell,

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=11891

as well as Martin’s Red Nell.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=178713

When bred to Red Bomber, Martin’s Red Bell produced Martin’s Lucy.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=11893

Red Dagger was bred to Phaneuf’s Red Ninja to produce Martin’s Red Snapper

and Martin's Red Lace.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=229198

When bred to Red Jerry, Martin’s Snapper produced Otter’s Famous Amos (1 x).

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=8854

Clouse's Humpy was bred to Jean's Joni to produce Martin's Jessie.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=110479

Jessie was bred to Red Pepper to produce Martin's Dixie.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=110480

Martin's Red Jerry was bred to Martin's Dixie, which produced the following dogs:

Mickel's Reba

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=110481

and Mickel's Red Clover:

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=161761

Martin's Red Staber was a pure Clouse dog.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=3495

Red Staber was bred to Martin's Ellie to produce Parker's Red Beulah.  This was one of the tightest Clouse breedings made by Michael Martin.

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=23020

The tightest Clouse breeding made by Michael Martin that I am aware of was listed in the Gazette.  It was Red Bomber to Martin’s Mean Jolene.

The breedings of Michael Martin were key to the success and development of Otter River Reds Kennels. Breedings down from the above dogs also made their way up to Canada.  By all accounts I have heard, the Martin version of Clouse dogs were very good.

Otter River Reds

Otter River Reds was a kennel operted by C. Mickel.  Looks like the foundation of his Clouse dogs were largely from the work of Michael Martin.  The registered owner names vary between Otter's & Mickel's but they are the same dogs from the same kennels.

The breedings started with Otter's Red Jerry.

The Calamity bitch was a heavy bred Clouse female.

Jerry was bred to Calamity, which produced Otter’s Bee Bee POR.

Otter’s Red Tara was also from the Red Jerry x Calamity breeding (littermate to Bee Bee).

The above breedings provided a base of heavy Clouse blood for Otter kennels.  The following breedings demonstrate some smart crosses, based off of the quality of the immediate dogs and a history of bloodlines that worked well together.

J.D.

The associates of JD have had a reputation for producing top-flight dogs for many years now.  It is not very well known but for a long period of time, the combine kept some Clouse blood.

Mindy was very heavy Clouse.

Mindy was bred to the Frank dog, to produce Max:

Scampi was obtained and bred into the family.

Max was bred to Scampi and produced these very game littermates:

Offspring are still around from these dogs with various dogmen.

Pat Patrick

Pat Patrick has had a successful line of dogs, spanning over several decades.  Part of his foundation stock had a heavy percentage of Clouse blood.

Starting with the oldest blood first,

Patrick’s Goldy:

http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/pedigrees/printPedigree.php?dog_id=169

I have heard this dog incorrectly referred to as being pure Clouse.  She is not from pure Clouse blood, nor was she bred by Mr. Clouse.

Goldy has an interesting ped, in that what Clouse blood she has, represents a certain stage of evolution.  This is the foundation Clouse blood, with an injection of old Hemphill (via Skaggs’ Firefly), as seen through Clouse’s Blade.  Since the foundation Clouse line has heavy OFRN roots, I suppose this is not a true out.

This particular Clouse blood is interesting to me as it does not have the added Butcher Boy stock, which is seen in other Clouse dogs of the same era.

Ferris' Red hot was 25 % of Goldy's pedigree and AKC registered as an American Staffordshire Terrier.

The Tacoma blood found in Red Hot goes back directly to such top-flight dogs as Corvino’s Braddock and Browne’s Tacoma Jack.  Goldie was bred directly to Bolio and Tombstone with outstanding results.

Patrick’s Tater:

Tater was half Clouse.  The Clouse blood in Tater looks to be just one generation out from Goldy.  Goldy had the older blood.  Here you see the Butcher Boy influence added to the foundation Clouse line.

Tater

Patrick’s Faith:

Another 50% Clouse dog.  The same Clouse blood as Tater, through a littermate.

Different blood on top, as compared to Tater.

Patrick’s Tuffy:

Simply put, Tater bred to Faith, maintaining 50% Clouse.  Pat bought this dog from Fred Maffie.

Romero’s Cricket:

Pure Clouse.  Here is the last "official" infusion of Clouse blood into Mr. Patrick’s line of dogs.

Here again, we are one generation out, from the previous usage of Clouse (Tater/Faith has older blood).

Cricket is the dam to the Homer dog.

Homer

The re-occurring theme here is that Patrick continued to go back to the Clouse blood, generation after generation.  It looks as if it was a smart thing to do, as the Clouse blood has always been known for producing some very game finishers.  When blended into an existing bloodline, results from crossing the Clouse blood have been something very special.

Another observation is that NONE of the Clouse dogs Mr. Patrick used, were directly from Bert himself.  I think there is a “supposed” relationship between Patrick and Clouse, because of the amount of Clouse blood that is present in Pat’s blood.  The opposite is actually true.

Mr. Clouse and Pat Patrick met for the first time, while attending a match in Arizona as spectators.

Bert Sorrells was also there.  From that meeting, Mr. Clouse’s protégé told me that Bert thought Pat Patrick was a “weird dude”.

The current percentage of Clouse blood offered by this yard is not very high, but it's there and serves its purpose.
