THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN DEVELOPED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE PHARMACY TECHNICIANS EMPLOYED AT NORTHERN HEALTH AND IS NOT CURRENTLY OPEN TO OTHER TECHNICIANS

 

VISION 

 

To develop Clinical Pharmacy Technicians who will work with a pharmacist, either on site or remotely, to enhance the capacity to provide Pharmaceutical Care through Clinical Pharmacy Services in Northern Health.

 

ASPIRATION STATEMENT

 

To develop and deliver an on-line Clinical Pharmacy Technician education program and to establish training and certification requirements to qualify Pharmacy Technicians for future Clinical Pharmacy positions.   This will lead to supported, strengthened and sustained Clinical Pharmacy Services in all facilities in Northern Health and serving all communities within northern BC. 

 

Oath of a Clinical Pharmacy Technician

 

I vow to devote my professional life to the service of all humankind through the profession of pharmacy.

 

I will consider the welfare of humanity and relief of human suffering my primary concerns.

 

I will apply my knowledge, experience, and skills to the best of my ability to contribute to the optimal drug therapy outcomes for the patients I serve.

 

I will keep abreast of developments and maintain professional competency in my profession of pharmacy.

 

I will maintain the highest principles of moral, ethical, and legal conduct.

 

I will embrace and advocate change in the profession of pharmacy that improves patient care.

 

I take these vows voluntarily with the full realization of the responsibility with which I am entrusted by the public.

Pledge of Professionalism

 As a student or practicing clinical pharmacy technician, I believe there is a need to build and reinforce a professional identity founded on integrity, ethical behavior, and honour.  

This level of professionalism will help ensure that I am true to the professional relationship I establish between myself and society and in my role as a member of the pharmacy community.

Integrity must be an essential part of my everyday life and I must practice pharmacy with honesty and commitment to service.    

To accomplish this goal of professionalism, I, as a student or practicing clinical pharmacy technician will 

 

DEVELOP a sense of loyalty and duty to the profession of pharmacy by being a builder of community, one willing and able to contribute to the well-being of others and one who enthusiastically accepts the responsibility and accountability as a member of the profession. 

 

FOSTER professional competency through life-long learning. I must strive for high ideals, teamwork and unity within the profession in order to contribute to optimal patient care. 

 

SUPPORT my colleagues by actively encouraging personal commitment to the Oath of a Clinical Pharmacy Technician and respect for the College of Pharmacist of BC Code of Ethics as set forth by the profession. 

 

INCORPORATE into my life and practice, dedication to excellence. This will require an ongoing reassessment of personal and professional values. 

 

MAINTAIN the highest ideals and professional attributes to ensure and facilitate the covenantal relationship required by a member of the pharmaceutical care team 

 

The profession of pharmacy is one that demands adherence to a set of rigid ethical standards. These high ideals are necessary to ensure the quality of care extended to the patients I serve. Therefore, I must strive to uphold these standards in my capacity as a clinical pharmacy technician and as a member of the profession of pharmacy

General Expectations

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians are expected to be aware of the College of Pharmacists of BC Code of Ethics and Framework of Professional Practice.  

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must abide by all rules and regulations of their practice site.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must report any problems arising from contact with patients or staff members during the course of their clinical activities.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must maintain personal tidiness and dress in the clinical setting.  Professional work attire will be determined by site policy.  A recommendation is to wear a white lab coat while in the clinical area.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must wear a name tag or ID badge with the clinical pharmacy technician’s name and title and must be worn at all times. Students of the clinical pharmacy technician program must identify themselves to patients, healthcare personnel and staff as trainees.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must recognize that they will not receive constant supervision and that they must keep the pharmacist, they are partnered with, informed of their location and activities.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians are recommended to carry a pager or cell phone while performing clinical activities so that they can be contacted at all times.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians are expected to participate in department meetings, patient care rounds, medical conferences, medication rounds, nursing report, patient interviews and other activities and contribute effectively when required.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must seek permission from the patient/ clients or the responsible staff before proceeding with any interaction. 

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must maintain confidentiality of information given by or about patients/clients.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must accept responsibility for all relevant aspects of patient or client care within the limitations of the clinical pharmacy technician role.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must behave in a manner which is not disruptive to patients and staff, on and off duty.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must behave in a respectful manner to colleagues, supervisors, patients and their families.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must acknowledge and respond to constructive criticism.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must acknowledge and respond to individual needs which respect culture, age, state of health and authority among hospital, health centre or clinic personnel and patients.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must demonstrate an understanding of the particular facility’s approach to patient/client care, and shows willingness to work within this framework.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must demonstrate an awareness of individual health workers’ roles and refers to them appropriately.

 

Clinical Pharmacy Technicians must be aware of and maintain appropriate professional boundaries
