A little About Us..

 Who we are.....

Hello!! I am Cleta Perry, with my husband Doug and daughter Sandra we operate Critter Companions in Western Kansas. We work closely with the local Vet and take in pets that are due to be euthanized because of a lack of a home. We are not for profit privately run animal shelter. We do not recieve funding to operate and all expenses are paid by us.

Every animal that comes to us is brought current with their vaccinations, spayed, neutered, declawed if necessary. They all recieve any medical attention that they may need to ensure they are happy and healthy when they go to their new homes.

Some may require training in certain areas before going to their new homes, including but not limited to: house training, leash training etc.

A Little about Them......

Who They Are

THEY are dumped off at truck stops, left at rest areas, dropped off out in the country, abandoned in town, picked up by the pound and brought in to the local vets clinic awaiting a home. In rare cases homes are found for them.. in most cases they are not and they are euthanized.

That is where we come in.. When an animal is scheduled to be euthanized, the vet calls us and we bring them home with us where they are housed until good loving homes can be found for them. Some remain here for up to a year, some are placed sooner. Each animal's special needs are taken into consideration when being placed. For example.. we had a female adult cat who had been diagnosed with feline leukemia. This is highly contaigous for other cats, but as long as she is kept healthy and treated promptly for any injurys or illnesses, she can live a long happy life. In some cases they may even throw off the leukemia. In this case we found her a home where she would be an only cat and recieve medical attention promptly.

Cleta's Critter Companions  has set adoption fees of $250.00 for dogs and $125.00 for cats.  These adoption fees help rescue other animals in need.  The following is an explanation of many of the typical health cost that are included in the adoption fee.

Y     Surgical costs for spay/neuter

Y     Testing for Feline Leukemia, Heartworms and other possibly fatal aliments

Y     Deworming Treatments and Flea Treatments

Y      Grooming, Dental work, Collar and Leashes

Y         Any needed medically treatments for Mange, Ringworm, Upper Respritory Infections, Heartworms, Abuse, Neglect or Accident related injuries, or anything else that requires immediate veterinary care

Y     Heartworm preventive treatments for dogs

Y      Vaccinations

Y    Physical Examination by a licensed Veterinarian

Typically for a relatively healthy animal the average costs to simply vaccinate, spay/neuter and office visit costs are much higher than our adoption fees. Annual upkeep for an otherwise healthy animal usually runs in the hundreds of dollars.  In all cases adoption fees do not cover all of the necessary treatments for rescued animals. If an applicant for a rescued pet cannot afford or thinks that the adoption fees are too high, it is highly recommended that they re-evaluate whether they are ready for the life-long commitment of having a pet.

REGARDING LONG-DISTANCE ADOPTIONS: While we will consider long-distance adoptions, they are complex and time consuming. When adopting long-distance, we must obtain assistance from other animal rescue people in your area to do a home-check for us as part of our adoption screening process. Transportation is the biggest obstacle for us in these cases. We are volunteers with an insurmountable task. Unfortunately we do not have enough financial or time resources required to participate in transportation of dogs/cats from our foster homes to their permanent homes. LONG DISTANCE ADOPTERS MUST BE WILLING TO TAKE ON SOME OF THIS RESPONSIBILITY. WE WILL NOT ALLOW ANY OF OUR ANIMALS TO FLY UNACCOMPANIED!!! We hope that interested applicants will be understanding of our limitations and be willing to do their part with respect to transportation.

FOSTER HOMES ARE NEEDED BADLY.  We need people to take our dogs one at a time and give it the love and attention of a "real" home for a few weeks, more if the dog requires it.  You will need to play, walk, possibly house break, teach the basics ie, sit, down, come, and heel.  Some will need to be socialized with people again as they were mistreated etc.  Some are just puppies and others are seniors.

Sponsor a pet

If you are unable to adopt or foster a pet, perhaps you can sponsor one.  The cost for sponsoring a cat is $10.00 per month and for a dog $15.00 per month. You choose which pet you would love to sponsor and we send you photos and correspondance about your chosen pet.  To sponsor a pet all you need to do is to e-mail us at cletascrittercompanions@yahoo.com with "sponsor a pet" in the subject line.  Tell us which pet you would love to sponsor and your e-mail and/or mailing address so we may send you the information. All we ask is that you sponsor for a minimum time of 6 months or until the pet is adopted which ever is least.  You may pay online with paypal or e-mail us for mailing instructions for a check or money order.
